TL;DR

To integrate SEC filings into your AI agent, give it a search tool that targets Valyu's valyu/valyu-sec-filings dataset, checks the returned filing identity, and passes source URLs alongside the retrieved text. Let the model summarize the evidence, but keep the original passages so someone can check its answer.

We will build a small TypeScript agent that answers: “What supply-chain risks does Apple disclose in its fiscal 2024 10-K?” It uses one search tool and a two-step model interaction: retrieve evidence, then draft a summary. No vector database, document-ingestion pipeline or background worker.

This is a historical filing example, not an assessment of Apple's current risk exposure or an investment recommendation.

Your agent knows the company. Does it know the filing?

Suppose you are adding company research to an internal assistant. A colleague asks about Apple's supply-chain risks. The model can probably produce a plausible answer about suppliers, manufacturing and geopolitical exposure.

But the question is not “what risks might a hardware company face?” It is “what did this company disclose in this filing?”

That distinction changes the implementation. You need a company, a form, a reporting period and a link to the original disclosure. Otherwise, your agent can quietly combine a recent news story, an older annual report and a general industry observation into one confident paragraph.

Our outcome is deliberately modest: a short research brief with the retrieved filing passages and source links. A person can then decide what needs more investigation, compare later disclosures, or open the full filing for context.

What SEC filings should an AI agent search?

Start with the form that matches the question:

Form What it is Example question
10-K An annual report with business, risk and financial disclosures What risks did the company disclose for this fiscal year?
10-Q A quarterly report, generally covering the first three fiscal quarters What did the company report for this quarter?
8-K A current report covering specified material events What did the company announce about this event?

A filing date is not the same as a reporting period. Apple's fiscal 2024 10-K covers the year ended September 28, 2024, but was filed on November 1, 2024. Its accession number is 0000320193-24-000123. You can verify those fields on the SEC filing index.

We pin this document rather than claiming to discover the latest report. A “latest filing” feature needs an additional step to resolve the issuer, form, date and any relevant amendments before retrieval.

A filing identity card separates Apple Inc., CIK 320193, Form 10-K, reporting period September 28, 2024, filing date November 1, 2024 and accession number. These fields identify a historical submission, not the latest disclosure.

The company, form, reporting period and filing date answer different questions. Keep them separate.

How does Valyu fit into the agent?

Valyu Search returns relevant content and source URLs. Your application can select the SEC filings dataset through includedSources, then expose that retrieval as a tool the model can call.

The SDK calls this route searchType: "proprietary". That is a dataset-search label, not a claim that SEC filings are private. The underlying filings are public; Valyu provides the retrieval service.

Here is the whole workflow:

  1. The model chooses search terms for the research question.
  2. The tool searches the SEC filings dataset through Valyu.
  3. Code keeps passages whose URLs belong to the selected SEC submission.
  4. The model drafts a summary using those passages.
  5. Code saves the summary and retrieved evidence together.

An agent calls a read-only SEC search tool. Valyu retrieves filing passages, application code checks the selected SEC submission URL and retains excerpts, and the model drafts a summary with source IDs for human review.

Search supplies evidence. The source check narrows document identity. Neither step proves that a generated claim is correct.

Step 1: set up the project

Use Node.js 24.2 or later. The code was checked on Node.js 24.12.0.

mkdir sec-filings-agent
cd sec-filings-agent
npm init -y
npm pkg set type=module
npm install valyu-js@2.11.1 ai@7.0.143 @ai-sdk/openai@4.0.96 zod@4.6.7

Get a Valyu key from platform.valyu.ai. Your account must have access to the SEC filings source. Check the current pricing and source access rather than assuming every key includes it.

Create a .gitignore before adding credentials:

node_modules/
.env*
sec-result.json
*.pem
*.key
credentials.*
secrets.*

Then create .env.local:

VALYU_API_KEY=your-valyu-key
OPENAI_API_KEY=your-openai-key
OPENAI_MODEL=your-tool-capable-openai-model-id

Replace all three placeholders. Choose a model available to your account that supports tool calling through the OpenAI Responses API. OpenAI is the host-model provider in this example, not a requirement for using Valyu.

Both Valyu retrieval and host-model calls can incur charges. Keep the keys server-side, not in a browser bundle or source control.

Step 2: add one SEC filing search tool

Save this as sec-agent.ts. This is the complete example, including the model interaction and saved output.

import { generateText, isStepCount, tool, type LanguageModel } from "ai";
import { createOpenAI } from "@ai-sdk/openai";
import { Valyu } from "valyu-js";
import { z } from "zod";
import { writeFile } from "node:fs/promises";
import { pathToFileURL } from "node:url";

export const FILING = {

  directory: "/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000032019324000123/",
};
export const QUESTION = "What supply-chain risks does Apple disclose in its fiscal 2024 10-K?";

    const url = new URL(value);
    return url.protocol === "https:" && url.hostname === "www.sec.gov" &&

  } catch { return false; }
}

    throw new Error("Set VALYU_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY and OPENAI_MODEL.");
  }
  const result = await research(new Valyu(), createOpenAI().responses(modelId));
  await writeFile("sec-result.json", JSON.stringify(result, null, 2), { mode: 0o600 });
  console.log(result.summary);
  console.log("\nRetrieved sources (not a claim-by-claim fact check):");
  for (const item of result.evidence) console.log(`[${item.id}] ${item.title}\n${item.url}`);
}

if (process.argv[1] && import.meta.url === pathToFileURL(process.argv[1]).href) {
  main().catch(() => {
    console.error("Research failed. Check credentials, model access and SEC source access; " +
      "no matching passages is a retrieval gap, not proof that a risk is absent.");
    process.exitCode = 1;
  });
}

The code uses the Valyu TypeScript Search SDK and the Vercel AI SDK's tool-calling API.

Three details matter more than the number of lines:

The dataset is explicit. includedSources: ["valyu/valyu-sec-filings"] selects the filing source. We are not asking general web search to find something that looks financial.

The filing boundary is enforced after retrieval. matchesFiling() accepts HTTPS links on www.sec.gov within the verified issuer/accession directory. A same-company filing from a different year is rejected. SEC submissions can contain exhibits and a complete-submission text file, so matching the accession does not by itself establish that a passage belongs to Item 1A or answers the question. Review its section and context.

The summary step cannot run more tools. The first step must invoke search. The second has toolChoice: "none". The tool's own guard also rejects a second search call. The model does not get a shell, trading tool or arbitrary URL-fetch tool.

The example does not normalize SEC viewer links or alternate mirrors into accepted URLs. If the search returns only those links, it stops rather than silently broadening the document boundary.

Step 3: run it and inspect the evidence

After configuring the keys and model, run:

node --env-file=.env.local sec-agent.ts

The command prints the model's draft and the retrieved source URLs. It also writes sec-result.json with:

Field What it holds
filing The pinned company, form, period, filing date and accession
question The question asked in this example
retrievedAt When this application collected the evidence
summary The model-generated draft
evidence Source IDs, titles, URLs, source identifiers and retained excerpts

Each retained excerpt is capped at 8,000 characters. It is retrieved evidence, not necessarily a complete section or the whole filing. Open the source to read surrounding context.

The code checks that the draft includes at least one source ID and rejects IDs that were not retrieved. That catches a reference such as [S99] when the evidence contains only S1 and S2. It does not check that every claim has a citation or that a cited passage supports the claim.

An empty result set, rejected URL or source-access failure stops the example. “We did not retrieve usable evidence” must not become “the company disclosed no risk.”

What should a good answer distinguish?

Here is one sentence verified directly in Apple's fiscal 2024 10-K, Part I, Item 1A:

Because the Company relies on single or limited sources for the supply and manufacture of many critical components, a business interruption affecting such sources would exacerbate any negative consequences to the Company.

That is a risk disclosure, not proof that a particular interruption occurred. A useful summary should preserve that conditional meaning.

  • Supported interpretation: Apple disclosed that interruptions affecting certain concentrated supply sources could worsen negative consequences.
  • Unsupported leap: Apple suffered a specific production interruption, or a disruption will happen next quarter.

This quotation was checked against the original SEC document. It is not presented as output from a live Valyu search or a completed agent run. Your search terms and returned passages can differ.

Treat filing text as untrusted data

Every retrieved passage is untrusted input to the model, even when its source URL is legitimate. Supply it as evidence, never as instructions that can grant permissions or trigger actions.

This example gives the model only a read-only retrieval tool, then disables tools for the summary. It retains source links and excerpts for human review. The system prompt reinforces that boundary, but a prompt is not a complete prompt-injection defense.

For a production application, sanitize generated Markdown before rendering HTML, enforce user access to stored research, and keep consequential actions outside this research step. A cited answer should not automatically execute a trade, change a portfolio or send confidential information elsewhere.

How do you adapt this to another company or filing?

Change the target only after checking its official SEC index:

  1. Confirm the issuer and CIK, not just a ticker in a search query.
  2. Select the form and reporting period. Decide how to handle amendments such as 10-K/A separately.
  3. Record the filing date and accession number.
  4. Update FILING, its directory, QUESTION, and the fixed company/period prefix in the search call. Also update the tool description and historical-period instruction; these are intentionally explicit for this single example.
  5. Review retrieved passages before using the generated summary.

For comparisons, keep evidence from each filing separate. “What changed?” requires checking both versions; a passage retrieved from one year does not establish that the other year omitted it.

If your application needs revenue growth, margins or other calculations, retrieve the appropriate statement data and calculate with code. Preserve units, periods and whether values are consolidated, segment-level, quarterly or year-to-date. Do not ask a language model to guess missing values from narrative text.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this with an existing AI agent?

Yes. Register the search tool in your existing agent and pass its results back as tool data. This tutorial uses TypeScript, Valyu and the Vercel AI SDK, but the underlying pattern is a source-restricted retrieval tool with application-owned evidence handling.

Do I need to scrape EDGAR or build a vector database?

Not for this integration. Valyu handles the retrieval request. You still need to verify the selected filing and inspect the returned evidence. SEC filings remain publicly available through EDGAR if you prefer to build and operate your own retrieval system.

Does this find the latest 10-K automatically?

No. It deliberately targets Apple's fiscal 2024 submission. Resolve the latest applicable filing and any amendments in a separate discovery step before adapting this pattern to current research.

Does a source URL prove the model's answer is accurate?

No. The URL helps establish provenance. The citation-ID check confirms that a referenced ID exists. Neither validates the financial meaning, proves complete coverage or checks every generated claim against its source.

Start with one filing, not an entire financial platform

The useful first integration is small: one company, one filing, one question, original passages and links someone can inspect.

Once that works on representative queries, expand deliberately to multiple filings, comparisons and structured financial data. Keep the same discipline: know which document the answer came from, and distinguish a company's disclosure from your agent's interpretation.

What would you add to your agent first: risk-factor research, quarterly results or material-event tracking?
