More than 100 million Americans are slated to head to the polls in this midterm election cycle. With key races for US Senate, governor and every seat in the US House of Representatives on the ballot, you’re likely going to be itching to find out which candidates sealed a victory. With such high stakes, news outlets, social media and online publications are likely going to be overwhelmed with updates, predictions and commentary.

But to cut through the noise and find out the results you actually care about, here are some tips to keep track of election results on Tuesday, especially in key battleground states like Alaska, Iowa, Ohio and Texas.

Where to find official election results

You can typically find confirmed Election Day results online on an official state government website, such as the secretary of state’s site or the state board of elections site. But if you’re not interested in hopping from state website to state website, there are simpler – yet still trustworthy – methods to find out race results.

Google keeps it simple

One of the simplest ways to keep track of election results is via Google, which pulls midterm election results from The Associated Press, a longstanding source with a history of accurate election results.

To access it, just fire up Google and type “election” or “election results,” and a panel will appear at the top of Google, giving you different options to browse through, including overview (top stories, news and so on), results and more.

In the Results tab, you can browse through results for the Senate and House, governor races and ballot measures.

Watch results on the news

Several major outlets will be covering election results. Here are a few:

  • ABC News will begin its coverage, ABC News Election Night: Vote 2026, at 7 p.m. ET with anchor David Muir and is slated to wrap up primetime coverage around 2 a.m. ET.
  • CBS News will begin coverage Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET with America Decides: Election 2026.
  • CNN will kick off its Election Night in America special starting at 4 p.m. on Election Day.

DIRECTV will also offer free coverage through NBC News NOW and ABC News Live on its MyFree DIRECTV streaming platform.

If you own an iPhone, track the election from your lock screen

Sorry, Android users! But iPhone users can access key election results right from their smartphone lock screen.

The updates will not begin until Tuesday evening, but you can opt in now.

To set election results on your lock screen, open the Apple News app (no subscription needed). At the top, you’ll see a button for 2026 Midterms. Click on it, and then you’ll see two options at the top of the screen: How to vote and Follow the 2026 midterms live.

Click Follow the 2026 midterms live, and you’ll be scheduled to receive real-time updates on your home and lock screen.

When will we know the winners of each race?

Don’t expect to find out the victors right when polls close – or even before you go to bed on Tuesday night. It’s best practice to be wary of politicians or organizations that do call certain races early, and keep your guard up for nonsense you may hear from so-called experts, especially across social media. Always reference trusted sources, like The Associated Press, for US election information.

It’s good to remember that the closer a given race is in a state, the longer it takes for enough ballots to be counted to get the final result. A particularly close race may even require a recount. You may not see certain races called until Wednesday or even later.
