KAI 成功測試 AI 衞星自主運行技術
KAI Successfully Tests AI-Powered Autonomous Satellite Operations

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has completed a demonstration of AI-based technology that enables satellites to assess situations and respond autonomously. The company said on Oct. 21 that its BEE-1012 CubeSat successfully carried out a pilot mission involving AI-powered autonomous operations in orbit on Oct. 20. The satellite was launched aboard the fifth flight of South Korea's Nuri rocket.
The BEE-1012 CubeSat carries an AI module developed in-house by KAI. The company incorporated fault and remaining-life prediction systems and predictive maintenance technologies refined through aircraft development. The module was trained on tens of thousands of fault scenarios.
The AI module uses onboard AI processing technology to autonomously analyze satellite anomalies and determine optimal solutions.
Conventional satellites transmit data to ground stations for analysis when anomalies occur. The AI module makes real-time decisions in orbit, potentially maximizing satellite survivability and significantly reducing the cost of transmitting and receiving data.
The demonstration involved three stages: transmitting simulated fault signals, analyzing their causes and scope using the AI module, and generating technical reports containing recommended responses for transmission to the ground station. KAI also strengthened cooperation with domestic companies during development. It worked with defense AI specialist Funzin to implement an intelligent solution optimized for the space environment. AI semiconductor startup Mobilint supplied a neural processing unit (NPU) for space and defense applications.
KAI plans to begin the main demonstration mission for its autonomous operations technology in December and establish the technology as a core standard specification for future satellite systems.
