LG Uplus reported an 84% surge in third-quarter operating profit from a year earlier, largely reflecting a low comparison base caused by one-time labor costs last year. Its artificial intelligence (AI) data center business continued to deliver double-digit growth, emerging as a new growth driver.
LG Uplus said Nov. 4 that consolidated third-quarter revenue fell 0.7% from a year earlier to 3.9813 trillion won, while operating profit rose 84% to 297.6 billion won. Net profit increased 272% to 183.1 billion won.
The sharp increase in operating profit was largely attributable to one-time expenses incurred last year. LG Uplus recorded 150 billion won in voluntary retirement costs in the third quarter of 2025, reducing operating profit to 161.7 billion won. Excluding those expenses, operating profit would have been 311.7 billion won, or 14.1 billion won higher than this year's third-quarter figure.
Consolidated service revenue, excluding handset sales, totaled 3.1021 trillion won. Service revenue on a standalone basis, reflecting the company's core telecommunications operations, rose 0.7% to 2.912 trillion won. Cumulative consolidated service revenue for the first nine months of 2026 increased 1.6% from a year earlier to 9.2156 trillion won.
By business segment, mobile revenue declined 0.9% from a year earlier to 1.6867 trillion won. Mobile service revenue, excluding interconnection revenue, increased 0.4% to 1.6232 trillion won.
Total subscriber lines across mobile network operator (MNO) and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services rose 6.2% to 32.143 million. However, MNO handset subscriber lines increased just 0.2% to 11.247 million. Average revenue per user (ARPU) for MNO subscribers fell 1% from a year earlier to 35,764 won.
The enterprise infrastructure business improved its performance, supported by growth in AI data centers.
Third-quarter enterprise infrastructure revenue increased 10% from a year earlier to 472.2 billion won. Within the segment, AI data center (AIDC) revenue rose 27% to 131.7 billion won.
AIDC revenue has increased steadily this year, from 114.4 billion won in the first quarter to 124.1 billion won in the second quarter and 131.7 billion won in the third quarter. AIDC accounted for 27% of enterprise infrastructure revenue.
LG Uplus is building a data center in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, with a total power intake capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) to expand its AI data center business. The company plans to bring four buildings into operation in stages by 2028.
According to LG Uplus, demand has been secured for Buildings 2 through 4 at the Paju data center. Building 1, which has already secured a customer, will have a capacity of 50 MW and is scheduled for completion in June 2027.
In June, LG Uplus announced a target of securing 5 trillion won in cumulative AIDC orders by 2030. The company is expanding cooperation with external partners and pursuing additional design-build-operate (DBO) projects.
Capital expenditure also increased alongside investment in AI data centers. Third-quarter capital expenditure (CAPEX) on a standalone basis rose 30% from a year earlier to 569.8 billion won.
