分享 Glen Canyon Dam AI 模型前的五項檢查
Five Checks Before Sharing an AI Model of Glen Canyon Dam
I used Glen Canyon Dam as a test case for a problem that appears in many infrastructure projects: a generated 3D scene can be easy to share and hard to interpret. The dam near Page, Arizona, has a concrete arch, a large reservoir, a hydroelectric powerhouse, a downstream river, and a dramatic red-rock setting. I used Shapezo to create a map-selected context model, then wrote five checks I would apply before sending it to another team.
The goal was not to make the AI scene look official. The goal was to make its role clear.
Check 1: save the map extent
I selected the dam, a portion of Lake Powell, the bridge and access roads, the powerhouse, and the first downstream canyon section. I saved the selected boundary, date, coordinate notes, and the reason for choosing that extent. A later user should be able to tell whether a new model shows the same place or a different frame.
The extent is important because a narrow view emphasizes concrete while a wider view explains the reservoir and desert terrain. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions.
Check 2: label generated objects as context
Shapezo works by letting me draw a region on a map and asking AI to generate a model of that region. The result can show a plausible dam mass, canyon, roads, water surface, and plant setting. I label these elements as generated context. I do not label them as surveyed geometry, operating equipment, or confirmed water levels.
This wording prevents a common handoff mistake. A polished model is not automatically a controlled model. The receiving team needs to know which parts are for orientation and which parts came from verified sources.
Check 3: separate visual scenes from operating facts
I created a storm-after-rain scene with dark canyon walls and water moving through release structures. It was useful for explaining why spillways and downstream channels deserve attention. It was not evidence of a real release event. I kept operational claims out of the image and pointed reviewers to official notices and records for real conditions.
The same rule applies to the powerhouse. A generated interior can show a turbine hall, crane rails, generators, and service platforms, but it cannot confirm equipment status, access routes, or maintenance work.
Check 4: record the source of every measured value
If I add an elevation, reservoir level, dam height, generating capacity, or flow value, I attach a source and date. I do not copy a number from the generated scene. The AI model may help me decide where a number matters, but the number comes from a controlled document or authoritative dataset.
This check sounds obvious, yet it matters when a visual review moves quickly. A reviewer may assume that a crisp edge or believable scale was measured. The handoff note should remove that assumption.
Check 5: test a small exchange package
For a technical review, I would send the Shapezo context separately from terrain, drawings, and facility records. I would include one aerial scene, one downstream view, and one interior concept, each with a status note. I would also test the coordinate reference, units, filenames, and version owner on a small package before adding more data.
The point is traceability. If someone replaces the generated scene, the source and date should change without hiding the original context.
The review rule I kept
The AI model is strongest at helping people see the relationship between dam, reservoir, river, power plant, and canyon. It is weakest when a viewer asks it to prove a dimension, an operating condition, or a safety decision. I would keep those jobs separate.
Glen Canyon Dam makes the distinction obvious because the setting is visually powerful. The red rock can make an approximate scene feel authoritative. My five checks are a small guardrail: freeze the extent, label the model, separate visuals from facts, cite measured values, and test the handoff.
