使用 REST API 建構可靠的媒體處理流程

Building a Reliable Media Processing Pipeline with REST APIs

AI 導讀

可靠的媒體處理流程應先驗證輸入,再以非同步工作處理需時較長的影片任務,並安全地重試請求。API 應配合實際流程,考慮支援的操作、檔案要求、工作狀態查詢方式及錯誤處理。

A media processing workflow can look simple at first: upload a file, send a request, and download the result.

The complexity starts when the workflow needs to handle large files, network interruptions, and multiple processing tasks.

In this article, I will focus on a few engineering decisions that make a media pipeline more reliable.

Start with Input Validation

Before sending a request to a processing service, validate the input.

At a minimum, check:

Whether the file format is supported

Whether the file size is within the allowed limit

Whether the required parameters are present

Whether the source file can be accessed

Rejecting invalid input early is usually easier than debugging a failed processing job later.

Treat Long-Running Tasks as Jobs

Video processing is not always completed within a single HTTP request.

A better approach is to create a job and return an identifier.

The client can then check the job status:

import time
import requests

def wait_for_job(status_url, timeout=300):
start = time.time()

while time.time() - start < timeout:
    response = requests.get(status_url)
    response.raise_for_status()

    job = response.json()
    status = job.get("status")

    if status == "completed":
        return job

    if status == "failed":
        raise RuntimeError("Processing failed")

    time.sleep(3)

raise TimeoutError("Job did not finish in time")

This is a simplified example. A production implementation should also include authentication, backoff, and a defined error schema.

Make Retries Safe

A timeout does not necessarily mean that a request was never processed.

If the client retries immediately, it may create duplicate jobs.

Where supported, use an idempotency key. Otherwise, store the request identifier and check whether the original task is still running.

Choose an API That Fits the Workflow

An AI media API should be evaluated based on its supported operations, file requirements, task-status mechanism, and error handling.

The most useful API is not always the one with the largest number of features. It is the one that fits the actual processing pipeline.

Final Thoughts

Reliable media automation depends on input validation, asynchronous job handling, safe retries, and predictable responses.

These engineering fundamentals matter more than adding complexity to the workflow.
