Overview : How we tested image upscaling

We generated one 1024 × 1024 cat portrait in Ideogram 4.5 at Medium quality, with a square aspect ratio and Magic Prompt off. The generation screen showed six credits. The fine fur and woven collar gave us specific textures to inspect after enlargement.

A tabby cat facing the camera beside a bright window, with green eyes, long white whiskers, backlit ear hairs, and a woven blue collar.

We generated this 1024 × 1024 source in Ideogram 4.5 at Medium quality with Magic Prompt off.

We used this source prompt:

Prompt

Photorealistic close-up portrait of a tabby cat sitting beside a window, facing the camera, both eyes clearly visible. Fine striped fur, long individual white whiskers, detailed ear hairs, pink nose, and a small woven blue collar without lettering. Soft natural daylight, neutral blurred background, realistic colors. The whole face is in focus. Square composition, no text, no watermark.

We supplied that original independently to each tool. Ideogram Auto, Ideogram Topaz Standard 2, Upscale.media Super Resolution, and Upscayl Standard produced 2048 × 2048 files. The Let’s Enhance Prime and Gentle downloads measured 1924 × 1924.

We compared matching areas at the same display size and checked five things: eye structure, continuous whiskers, individual ear hairs, collar weave, and chest fur. We retained the Let’s Enhance watermarks in the comparisons. The comparisons below show where each result kept or changed the source detail.

Tool 1 : Ideogram: Model choice alongside image creation and editing

Ideogram is best for creators who want to select an upscaling model and continue creating or editing images in the same app.

You can upload an existing image or select one you created with us. Our Upscale app includes Auto and named models such as Topaz Standard 2, Text Refine, Bloom 2, and Redefine. Choose 2×, 4×, or 8× where the source allows, with an output pixel budget equivalent to 8192 × 8192. Larger inputs can offer fewer scales. Nano Banana Pro uses resolution choices instead. The Upscale button displays the credit cost before you run the job.

That model choice gives you control over the kind of enhancement you want. Standard 2 includes Strength, sharpening, denoising, compression correction, and face controls. Bloom 2 and Redefine offer creativity settings for more interpretive enhancement. Use Text Refine when the image has lettering: labels, posters, packaging.

Nano Banana Pro in our Upscale app: Select 1K, 2K, or 4K output and add a prompt to describe the intended result. Only resolutions larger than the source are selectable. For a 1024 × 1024 source, 2K or 4K is the relevant next step. This prompt-based option sits alongside the dedicated Topaz upscalers; it can suit a brief that includes enhancement instructions as well as enlargement. Check lettering, faces, and textures after the run, and review the displayed credit charge for the selected resolution.

Our Auto test: We selected the original cat and applied 2× enlargement. The screen showed 12.58 credits, and the downloaded PNG measured 2048 × 2048. The PNG had no watermark. Ear hairs came out as crisp, separate strands, whiskers stayed clean and continuous, and the chest fur gained definition.

For approved product details like fabric or packaging, pick a named model and set Strength yourself. Start low, check a 200% crop, and raise it until the detail looks right.

Ideogram Auto enlarged the 1024 × 1024 source to 2048 × 2048. Both images are shown at the same display size.

Our Standard 2 test: We used the same original at 2× and downloaded another 2048 × 2048 PNG. Standard 2 produced the same crisp ear hairs, bright whiskers, and defined fur. Its Strength, Sharpen, and Denoise controls let you tune how much detail it adds.

Our app also connects enlargement with the rest of the creative work. Use Precise Edit to make targeted changes before enlarging the approved image. You can develop an image, revise it, and prepare a larger version without choosing a separate subscription just for a standalone desktop upscaler. For broader creation options, see our guide to top AI image generators.

Credits and plan options: The Upscale app runs on any paid plan, or with credits you buy as needed. Plus costs $20 monthly or $180 annually. New images on Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise stay private until you publish them. Credit usage varies with the selected model and image settings, so check the displayed cost before running. See our plans and credits for current allowances.

Tool 2 : Upscayl Desktop: Free enlargement on your computer

For a folder of images you want to enlarge on your own computer, Upscayl Desktop removes the credit counter from the job. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its desktop application is separate from Upscayl’s cloud service.

We installed version 2.15.0 on Windows, selected Upscayl Standard, and chose 2×. Batch Upscayl and Double Upscayl were off. The application showed 1024 × 1024 → 2048 × 2048, matching the saved PNG.

The cat’s eye shape remained close to the source in our comparison. Texture became more pronounced in parts of the fur. At normal viewing size the difference was modest; the detail crops were better for judging the changes.

Local enlargement is a practical choice when you want to keep source images on your computer. It also puts the hardware requirement on you. You need a Vulkan-compatible GPU, which some older or integrated graphics chips lack.

Upscayl’s own guidance distinguishes low-resolution enlargement from fixing an out-of-focus image. Start with a small representative job before committing a whole folder. The desktop app supports batch enlargement, but your graphics hardware and chosen model affect the experience.

Cost: The desktop software is free. Our output had no visible watermark and required no purchased credits.

Upscale.media keeps it simple: no account for 2×, one toggle, and a clean PNG download.

We selected Super Resolution, set the scale to 2×, and left Enhance Quality off. The output measured 2048 × 2048, with no visible watermark.

The result stayed close to the source, with little added sharpening in the ear hairs and fur. The background stayed soft.

Leave Enhance Quality off for a faithful copy. Switch it on only when you want extra sharpening.

Free allowance: You get one free image a day without signing up, or three free credits and three free downloads a month with an account. Paid subscriptions and credit packs cover additional usage. In our test interface, 4× and 8× carried premium badges; the visible controls on your account determine which options are available.

Tool 4 : Let’s Enhance: Enhancement modes and browser batch jobs

Let’s Enhance puts enhancement modes and batch jobs in a browser service. Prime and Gentle give you two starting points for how strongly to enhance an image.

We supplied the original cat separately to Prime and Gentle. Both downloaded JPEGs measured 1924 × 1924 and carried a Let’s Enhance watermark. We kept those dimensions and marks in the comparisons.

Prime produced more pronounced contrast and texture around the eye and short facial fur. Gentle’s changes were more restrained. The two modes preserved the collar’s recognizable woven pattern, with differences in how strongly the surrounding hairs were defined.

Let’s Enhance (Prime): Original → upscale

The 1024 × 1024 original became a 1924 × 1924 output, and both are shown at the same display size.

Let’s Enhance Gentle produced these matching eye, whisker, ear-hair, collar, and chest-fur crops.

The download size is part of the result. Although these files are larger than the source, 1924 × 1924 is below an exact 2× enlargement of 1024 × 1024.

Plans and downloads: New accounts receive 10 introductory credits. Free output tops out at 8 megapixels and carries a watermark. Starter includes 100 monthly credits for $12 with monthly billing, or $9 per month billed annually. Paid access removes the watermark.

Tool 5 : Topaz Gigapixel: Dedicated photo enlargement

Topaz Gigapixel is a dedicated choice for photographers who want to work through enlargement models and inspect their effect on different source material.

Gigapixel has separate models for sharp photos, low-resolution images, text and shapes, and artwork, plus side-by-side model comparison, batch upscaling, and face recovery.

For an image with clean edges and lettering, a text-focused model gives you a different starting point from a photographic model. Use a high-fidelity model for sharp photos, and a recovery model for small or soft ones. Choose according to the source problem, then examine faces and repeated patterns.

The standalone application is a separate product from accessing Topaz Standard 2 inside Ideogram.

Subscription: Personal costs $29 a month, or $149 billed annually. Business buyers should check commercial eligibility, since Personal licensing has an organizational revenue threshold.

Tool 6 : Magnific: Creative enhancement with precision options

Magnific splits upscaling into two modes: Creative and Precision.

Creative enhancement can add texture and reinterpret details in illustrations, renders, and AI artwork. Precision targets closer reproduction for photographs and products. Creative mode also takes a text prompt, and both modes let you pick an engine.

If you want richer stone, foliage, or fabric in concept art, creative enhancement can be part of the brief. If a product texture is already approved, start with the precision-oriented options and compare the result closely.

Access: Magnific offers upscaler access through its subscription plans.

Tool 7 : Krea: Upscaling alongside other creative tools

Krea brings image enhancement into a suite that also covers generation, editing, and other visual tools. It offers multiple enhancement models, each with its own output allowance.

The Free plan includes basic upscaling up to 2K. That makes it another entry point for a small enlargement job, while larger outputs and different models can have different access requirements.

For creative work, compare whether the chosen model is preserving structure or contributing new texture. A model that improves an illustration’s surface detail may be a different choice from one intended to keep a product photograph close to its source.

Free and paid options: Free access is limited by compute allowance, model availability, and output size. Paid plans expand access.

Tool 8 : Adobe Firefly: Enlargement within Adobe image editing

Adobe Firefly offers Generative Upscale within its image-editing interface. You pick from Firefly Upscaler, Topaz Bloom, or Topaz Gigapixel, at 2× or 4×.

Bloom includes a creativity adjustment. Gigapixel includes face recovery.

If you already work in Photoshop or Firefly, upscaling sits one menu away from your edit. You can choose an Adobe or partner model without treating each one as a separate standalone application.

Generative credits: Free Adobe accounts get a daily allowance of upscales, though Adobe doesn’t publish the exact number. Images must be at least 512 × 512 pixels. Higher-volume access and partner-model options depend on your plan. Credit cost varies by model and shows next to the Upscale button.

Reference : Which upscaler should you use for photos, illustrations, or text?

Photos: Start with a model intended to preserve photographic structure. In Ideogram, Standard 2 provides strength, sharpening, and denoising controls. Review eye shape, skin or fur texture, and fine edges before increasing enhancement. Topaz Gigapixel’s photo-oriented models are another dedicated option.

Illustrations and AI artwork: Decide whether adding texture is part of the brief. Ideogram’s Bloom 2 offers Creativity, Prompt, and Keep colors controls. Lower creativity is the starting point for closer preservation; raise it when you want a more interpretive result. Magnific’s Creative and Precision modes provide a similar decision between re-detailing and closer reproduction.

Text and logos: Try Ideogram’s Text Refine for lettering and check every word at the final size. For a logo, use the approved vector master when available. Upscaling a raster logo increases its dimensions but does not recreate editable vector paths or verify its wording.

Reference : What to check before accepting an upscaled image

A larger file is not proof of more accurate detail. In our cat test, the collar weave was the most revealing detail. It showed how much texture each upscaler added. The same distinction applies when checking knitted clothing, hair, jewelry, or a product finish.

Look at the whole image first, then inspect matching crops. Check that whiskers and fine lines remain continuous, eye outlines keep their shape, and repeating textures still follow the source. Stronger contrast can make an output look sharper without preserving more information.

Also check for halos, the bright or dark outlines that can appear around whiskers and high-contrast edges, and color shifts in the collar, eyes, and neutral background. Keep both images at the same display size when comparing them.

Community questions about faces changing during upscaling reflect this practical concern. Check model selection and enhancement strength alongside the scale factor.

For an approved product image, compare the result with the actual item before publishing. Our guide to building product campaigns from a packshot explains how to carry the same product reference through new scenes and review each asset. For concept art, added texture may be welcome. Set that goal before choosing a creative enhancement mode.

Reference : Should you upscale to 2K, 4K, or higher?

Choose the pixel dimensions your final placement needs. A square 1024 × 1024 image becomes 2048 × 2048 at 2× and 4096 × 4096 at 4×. Each doubling of width and height creates four times as many pixels.

Start with one pass from the original to your final size. If you need 4×, select 4× directly where available; use Ideogram’s 8× option when the source and output limit allow it. Each additional enhancement run takes the previous output as its source, including any changed detail. Reserve chained 2× runs for a deliberate comparison, keeping the original as your reference.

For web layouts, start with the largest display size and any cropping you expect. You may get little visible benefit from exporting a much larger file that will be reduced heavily on the page.

For print, work backward from physical size and the printer’s requested pixels per inch. At 300 PPI, a 2048-pixel side covers about 6.8 inches; 4096 pixels covers about 13.7 inches. The right target also depends on the print method and viewing distance. Changing a DPI metadata field alone does not add image detail.

If you’re preparing merchandise, our guide to AI tools for print-on-demand designs also covers transparent artwork and vector export choices. Enlarging a raster image does not turn it into editable vector shapes.

Keep a lossless PNG or TIFF master for print where your tool and printer support it. Follow the printer’s requested format and color profile. For the web, export a suitably sized WebP copy and check the compression on fine lines and lettering. If an upload fails, check the platform’s actual file-size and dimension limits before spending credits on another run.

Reference : Privacy and image rights

For client images, decide where the file may be uploaded before choosing a cloud service. Upscayl Desktop runs locally. With Ideogram, Plus and higher plans keep new images private until you publish them.

Use source images you own or have permission to edit. Section 2.1 of our terms of service says we do not restrict your use of User Output, including commercial use. You remain responsible for your content and the rights needed for your inputs. Check any additional terms attached to the selected service or model before delivering client work.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Reference : Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI image upscaler?

Upscayl Desktop is a strong starting point for repeated free local enlargement on compatible hardware. Upscale.media offers limited recurring browser access, while Krea’s Free plan includes basic upscaling up to 2K. Adobe Firefly also offers daily free upscale generations with an Adobe account and requires an input of at least 512 × 512 pixels. Let’s Enhance provides introductory credits with watermarked free results. These are different kinds of free access, so check the downloadable output as well as the upload screen.

Can AI upscaling fix a blurry photo?

Some models can make soft images appear clearer, but their added details are predictions. Enlargement cannot verify what an unclear face, word, or texture originally contained. For a mildly soft source, try restrained enhancement first. Severe motion blur or missed focus can require a different restoration tool or a better source file.

Is 2× or 4× upscaling better?

Use the scale that meets your required dimensions. A 1024-pixel source becomes 2048 pixels wide at 2× or 4096 at 4×. More pixels give you more room for printing or cropping, but they do not guarantee a better-looking image. Compare the final output at its intended display size and inspect sensitive details.

Can you upscale an uploaded image in Ideogram?

Yes. Open our Upscale app and upload an image or select an existing creation. Choose Auto or a named model, select an available scale, review the displayed credit cost, and run the enlargement. It runs on any paid plan, or with credits you buy as needed. Available scales depend on the source dimensions and selected model.
