LS Eco Energy to Invest 64.9 Billion Won in Vietnam Ultracapacitor Plant

LS Eco Energy plans to invest 64.9 billion won in Vietnam to build an ultracapacitor (UC) production facility for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
LS Eco Energy said in a regulatory filing on Oct. 26 that it would invest 64.9 billion won in a new medium-sized ultracapacitor cell production facility at its Vietnamese subsidiary, LS Cable & System Vietnam (LSCV). The company also approved a 35 billion won capital increase in LSCV to finance part of the investment, equivalent to about 54% of the total facility spending.
Ultracapacitors, also known as supercapacitors or supercaps, are high-power energy storage devices. They store less energy than conventional batteries but can deliver large amounts of power over short periods. Their rapid charging and discharging capabilities make them suitable for industrial equipment requiring brief bursts of high power. Ultracapacitors are playing an increasingly important role in power generation systems for AI data centers.
LSCV will build the production facility on unused land within its existing factory in Vietnam. Mass production is scheduled to begin in April 2027, with facility investment expected to be completed by the end of June that year. LS Eco Energy aims to generate approximately 150 billion won in annual revenue from its ultracapacitor business by 2030.
The Vietnam facility is being established to support LS Materials’ growing overseas orders. On Oct. 13, LS Materials signed an ultracapacitor supply agreement worth approximately $51.5 million with a US hydrogen fuel cell company. The company is also negotiating additional supply contracts, creating a need to expand production capacity.
LS Eco Energy will manufacture ultracapacitors as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) using technology owned by LS Materials. The arrangement will allow LS Materials to expand its supply capacity by adding a Vietnamese production base to its existing domestic facilities. LS Eco Energy, meanwhile, will gain a new revenue source beyond its cable business.
LS Eco Energy plans to reduce production costs by taking advantage of Vietnam’s relatively low labor and utility expenses and will consider further investment depending on additional orders. “We will develop ultracapacitors into a new growth driver and expand our business into high-value-added products for AI data centers, including bus ducts,” said Lee Sang-ho, CEO of LS Eco Energy.
Maxwell and Skeleton Technologies are among the leading companies in the global ultracapacitor market. In South Korea, LS Materials and Vinatech are major players, while Vitzrocell, Samwha Electric, Korchip and Pureechem are also active in related businesses.
