Memory Lantern: A Private AI Remembrance Garden 🕯️

Some memories are too precious to fade. What if technology could help us preserve them in a meaningful and personal way?

For Hacktoberfest 2026, I built Memory Lantern, a private AI-powered remembrance garden inspired by the theme "Ghost in the Machine."

Memory Lantern is a digital space where people can preserve memories, celebrate meaningful relationships, and turn personal stories into heartfelt tributes.

🌻 What is Memory Lantern?

Memory Lantern allows users to create digital memories of people they cherish, preserve their stories, light virtual candles, and explore a peaceful remembrance garden.

The goal was to build something that combines technology with human emotions while keeping privacy at its core.

Plant a Memory: Create digital memories with names, relationships, personal stories, favorite foods, and music.
AI Tribute Generator: Generate remembrance letters, tribute speeches, memory quotes, and ofrenda blessings using Google Gemma.
Memory Garden: Explore saved memories with search and filtering options.
Virtual Ofrenda: A digital remembrance space inspired by the traditional Mexican altar.
Virtual Candles: Light candles to honor and remember cherished people.
Privacy-focused Storage: Personal memories are stored locally in the browser using LocalStorage.

🔐 Privacy Matters

Memory Lantern was designed with a privacy-first approach.

Personal memories are stored in the user's browser through LocalStorage. The local AI setup uses Ollama to run Gemma on the user's own machine.

The deployed frontend and backend are live. Hosted AI model connectivity is still being configured, so AI generation currently requires the local Ollama setup.

💭 What I Learned

Building Memory Lantern helped me explore full-stack development, React component architecture, FastAPI integration, local AI model integration, browser-based storage, and deployment using Render.

More importantly, this project reminded me that technology does not always have to be about productivity. It can also help us preserve stories, emotions, and memories that matter.

Because some lights never really go out. They simply find another way to shine. 🕯️
