LG Uplus is partnering with Seoul Women's University to conduct joint research on personal information protection and artificial intelligence (AI), while also developing specialized talent in the fields.

LG Uplus said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Seoul Women's University on November 2 at the university's campus in Nowon-gu, Seoul. The agreement covers joint research and professional training in personal information protection, AI and data. Attendees included Hong Kwan-hee, head of LG Uplus' Information Security Center; Lee Yoon-sun, president of Seoul Women's University; and Kim Hyung-jong, chair of the Department of Personal Information Protection at the university's graduate school.

The two parties will use the Innovation Zone, being established at Seoul Women's University by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), as a research hub for technologies that combine and analyze pseudonymized data. They plan to study secure ways to integrate public and private-sector data, including telecommunications data, and assess the risk of re-identifying individuals before and after data integration.

In particular, the partners will test technologies that automatically detect and pseudonymize sensitive information using actual datasets. They will also research Privacy by Design, an approach that incorporates personal information protection principles from the initial planning and design stages of services, with the aim of applying the technology to telecommunications services in the future.

The agreement also includes cooperation on professional training. LG Uplus will participate in Seoul Women's University's graduate-level programs to train master's and doctoral specialists in personal information protection and data utilization. The company plans to provide curriculum advice, capstone projects and joint seminars, as well as lectures by industry professionals, thesis supervision and practical mentoring.

LG Uplus has increased investment in information security and expanded efforts to recruit specialists following a personal information breach in 2023. At the time, the company announced a cybersecurity innovation plan and pledged to raise its annual information security investment to around 100 billion won. Its actual information security investment in 2023 was provisionally estimated at approximately 114.4 billion won.

In the same year, LG Uplus signed an agreement with Soongsil University to establish an employment-linked Department of Information Security. The department admitted its first class of 20 students in 2024 and is scheduled to produce its first graduates in 2028.

Hong Kwan-hee, head of LG Uplus' Information Security Center, said, "By combining the university's specialized research capabilities with LG Uplus' practical industry experience, we will strengthen our competitiveness in information security and contribute to training the next generation of security professionals needed by industry."
