Northstar launches with $7M to give AI agents the context to act on security risks

Cybersecurity startup Northstar Security AI Inc. launched today with $7 million in new funding to give artificial intelligence agents the context they need to act on security risks.

Northstar offers a platform that feeds data from a company’s existing security and information technology tools into a real-time Security Context Graph. A known vulnerability, an unmanaged device or an overprivileged account can look manageable on its own.

Put together, the same issues can leave a critical business system exposed. Those toxic combinations are what the graph is meant to find, since the underlying data usually sits in tools that don’t share it.

A company laptop with no endpoint protection is the example Northstar uses to illustrate the problem. Working out whether that one device poses a meaningful risk can mean going through six different tools. An analyst on the platform can type that question in plain language.

In that scenario, the reply shows the laptop belongs to a privileged user who can reach the payroll system. Fixing it then falls to Northstar’s AI agents, which can kick off a remediation workflow to push endpoint protection onto the machine. Humans can supervise those steps where appropriate.

The graph is also open to outside AI agents through the Model Context Protocol, so customers can build their own security workflows on Anthropic PBC’s Claude and other AI tools. Northstar currently integrates with more than 70 security and IT systems, including those from Okta Inc., GitHub Inc. and Workday Inc.

Amer Deeba (pictured), Northstar’s co-founder and chief executive, said security teams are “drowning in data but starving for context.” Decades of spending on tools that find problems have left the follow-up work largely manual, he said.

Randy Barr, chief information security officer at Cequence Security Inc., said his team uses Northstar’s agentic workflows to continuously remediate security issues. Security teams don’t need “another dashboard generating more findings,” he said.

Deeba started Northstar with Ed Rowe, its chief technology officer, whom he first worked with at Adobe Inc. in the late 1990s. After senior leadership roles at Qualys Inc., Deeba co-founded Normalyze Inc., a data security posture management startup that Proofpoint Inc. acquired in 2024. Rowe was chief technology officer at Farmers Business Network Inc. AppDynamics Inc. is also on his resume, from a stint as senior vice president of engineering.

MVP Ventures and Outliers Venture Capital joined the seed round, which Wing Venture Capital led. Cybersecurity industry veterans Gerhard Eschelbeck, Renaud Deraison and Justin Somaini invested as individuals.

Eschelbeck, a former chief information security officer at Google LLC, said that in the next generation of security operations, teams will be measured by “how quickly they can proactively resolve risks.”

Northstar said the money will fund product development, hiring and go-to-market work, and the platform is available to customers now.
