PDF Redaction Studio Desktop 推出 macOS 版:尚未獲 Apple 公證的安裝説明

I Shipped a macOS App That's Not Notarized Yet — Here's the Honest Install Story

PDF Redaction Studio Desktop — the native app I've been writing about for Windows and Linux — now runs on macOS too, on Apple Silicon. Same engine, same local-first approach: AI detects PII, you review it, export actually strips it from the PDF instead of drawing a box over it.

I want to be upfront about one thing before the walkthrough: the macOS build is not notarized by Apple yet. That means Gatekeeper will complain on first launch, and you'll need one Terminal command to get past it. If that's a dealbreaker for you, fair enough — but if you've ever run a side-loaded .app before, this is a non-issue.

What it does

Same core as the Windows release:

  • AI-based PII detection — names, SSNs, emails, phone numbers, addresses, credit cards, faces
  • A review step so you control what actually gets redacted before export
  • Export that removes the matched content from the PDF (text, embedded objects, image regions), not just paints over it
  • Everything runs locally by default — OCR, the PII/NER model, face detection — no document upload required

Installing on macOS

Two options from the download page:

  • Pdf.Redaction.Studio.dmg — open it, drag the app into Applications
  • Pdf.Redaction.Studio-darwin-arm64.zip — portable, unzip and run

Requirements: Apple Silicon (M1 or later), macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. No Intel build yet.

The Gatekeeper step

Since the app isn't notarized, the first launch shows "can't be opened" or "is damaged." Run this once:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Pdf Redaction Studio.app"

Then open it normally. (Swap the path if you put it somewhere other than /Applications.) If you'd rather not touch Terminal: open the app once, then System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

I'm not thrilled about shipping something that needs this step — notarization is on the list — but I'd rather ship a working build with an honest caveat than hold the release for a signing pipeline that's still in progress.

Reviewing matches

Detection groups results by category and highlights them on the page. You filter, add what the model missed, remove false positives — same review UI as the other platforms.

Where things stand

Windows (Microsoft Store), Linux (Snap + .deb), and now macOS (direct download) are all out. Apple notarization and an Intel build for macOS are both queued up next.

If you hit a document type that trips up detection on macOS specifically, or the Gatekeeper step doesn't work as described on your setup, I'd like to know — that's exactly the kind of thing that's hard to catch without real machines testing it.
