Hyosung Heavy Industries has established a dedicated factory for export-oriented circuit breakers.

The company said on Oct. 16 it completed construction of a high-voltage circuit breaker plant in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. The facility covers 18,966 square meters.

The new plant will exclusively produce 420-kilovolt (kV), 550kV and 800kV high-voltage circuit breakers for export. It will handle the entire production process, from component manufacturing and assembly to testing and shipment, at a single location. Existing circuit breaker factories will be reorganized to focus on products for the domestic market.

Power grid construction has struggled to keep pace with the rapid expansion of AI data centers by major technology companies. High-voltage circuit breakers rated at 420kV, 550kV and 800kV, which are used in large-capacity power transmission, are essential for ensuring a stable electricity supply.

Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to expand its supply of high-voltage circuit breakers through the new export-dedicated plant and its overseas manufacturing facilities.

In the US, the company established a joint venture with power and energy infrastructure solutions provider Quanta in June to manufacture high-voltage circuit breakers. It is also expanding its Memphis plant, which produces high-voltage transformers, with an investment of 440 billion won. In Europe, the company is strengthening cooperation with local power technology institutions through its European research and development center in the Netherlands.
