How to Use an AI Coding Agent Locally on Your PC (Step by Step)

An AI coding agent can read your project, write code, run commands and fix errors. It feels like having a helper next to you.

Most coding agents run in the cloud. That means you need internet, you may pay every month, and your code goes to a remote server.

There is another way. You can run a coding agent on your own PC.

In this guide, I will show you what a local coding agent is, what you need, and how to use one the right way.

What is a local AI coding agent?

A local AI coding agent is an AI helper that runs on your computer. The AI model lives on your machine. It does not need a cloud server to think.

It can help you with many daily tasks:

  1. Explain code you do not understand.
  2. Refactor old code: Split a huge file into clean modules without breaking how the app works.
  3. Find and fix bugs.
  4. Write tests.
  5. Add comments and docs.
  6. Read an unfamiliar project and explain how the parts connect and where to make a change.

Why run it locally?

Here are the main reasons people choose this:

  1. Your code stays on your PC. This is good for work code and client code.
  2. No monthly fee. Many local tools have no subscription.
  3. No credits to run out. You can ask as much as you want.
  4. It works offline. You can code anywhere.

What do you need?

You do not need a very strong computer to start. Here is a simple check:

  1. A Windows, Linux or macOS computer.
  2. Enough free disk space. AI models can be large, so keep a few GB free.
  3. Enough RAM. More RAM lets you run bigger models.
  4. A GPU is nice to have, but not required. Many local tools work on a CPU too. It will just be slower.

If your PC is older, start with a smaller model. You can move to a bigger one later.

Step 1: Pick a local AI app

You have two main paths.

The first path is to build your own setup. You install a model runner, download models, add an agent tool and connect everything. It gives you full control, but it takes time and you may hit errors.

The second path is to use a ready made desktop app. You install it, open it and start. This is much easier for beginners.

For this guide, I will use HDQGen as the example. It is a desktop app that runs AI on your PC. It has a coding agent, and it also has chat, image, video and music tools in the same app. You pay once, and there is no subscription.

You can follow the same ideas with any local tool.

Step 2: Install the app

  1. Go to the download page for your system. HDQGen has listings for Windows and Linux.
  2. Download the file.
  3. Run the installer and finish the setup.
  4. Open the app.

On Windows, HDQGen needs Windows 7 or later, 64 bit.

Step 3: Open the coding agent

Open the app and find the coding agent section. In HDQGen, the coding agent is separate from the general agent. Use the coding agent when your work is about code.

Take a moment to look around the screen. See where you type your task. See where the agent shows what it is doing.

Step 4: Start with a small, safe task

Do not give the agent your biggest project on day one. Start small.

Here are good first tasks:

  1. "Explain what this file does."
  2. "Find any bugs in this function."
  3. "Write unit tests for this function."
  4. "Add comments to this code."

Choose a test project, or a copy of a real one. This way, nothing important is at risk while you learn.

Step 5: Write clear prompts

The agent gives better results when your task is clear. Here is a simple pattern:

  1. Say what you want.
  2. Say where it should work, for example which file.
  3. Say any rules, like the language or style.

Weak prompt:

"Fix my code."

Better prompt:

"In the file app.py, the login function returns an error when the password is empty. Fix it and keep the code style the same. Do not change other files."

The second prompt is short, but it gives the agent everything it needs.

Step 6: Keep the permission gate on

This is the most important step.

An agent can write files and run commands. That is useful, but you should stay in control.

Look for these safety features:

  1. A permission gate. The agent should ask before it writes a file or runs a command. In HDQGen, every tool call passes through a gate that you control.
  2. Read only mode. Use this when you only want the agent to look and explain. In HDQGen, a read only run stays read only.
  3. A clear view of what is running. You should always see what the agent is doing.

At the start, approve each action by hand. Read what the agent wants to do. Once you trust it for a type of task, you can allow more.

Step 7: Review every change

Treat the agent like a new teammate. Its work is a pull request. Always review it.

Before you accept a change, check:

  1. Does the code do what you asked?
  2. Did it change only the files you expected?
  3. Does it run without errors?
  4. Does it pass your tests?

AI can make mistakes. A short review keeps your project safe.

Step 8: Use background jobs for long tasks

Some tasks take time, like a big refactor or a long test run. A good agent can work in the background while you do something else.

HDQGen can run long jobs as background agents, and it has a panel that shows what is running. This lets you keep coding while the agent finishes its job.

Step 9: Connect your own tools with MCP

MCP is a way to connect outside tools and data to an AI agent. For example, you can connect a tool that reads your database docs or your task list.

HDQGen supports your own MCP servers. This is a good step for later, after you are happy with the basics.

Tips to get better results

  1. Break big tasks into small steps.
  2. Give the agent the file names it should use.
  3. Ask it to explain its plan before it makes changes.
  4. Save your best prompts so you can reuse them.
  5. If the answer is poor, try again with a clearer prompt, or try a different model.

The honest limits

Local AI is great, but it is not magic.

  1. Local models can be smaller than the biggest cloud models. Very hard problems may be harder for them.
  2. Speed depends on your PC. A CPU works, but a GPU is faster.
  3. You may need to try a few models to find the best one for your work.

For daily coding tasks, a local agent is often enough. And you get privacy and no monthly fee in return.

Final thoughts

Running an AI coding agent on your own PC is easier than ever. You do not need to be an expert. Install an app, start with a small task, keep the permission gate on and review the results.

If you want to try it, you can check out HDQGen and test it on a small project first.
