To ease the transition for new users, #NetBSD -current now includes an alternative editor to vi(1) and xedit(1) in its base system, atto(1). https://man.netbsd.org/atto.1

It is a modeless screen-based editor similar to nano, pico, xedit, or emacs. It is only 48 kilobytes, making it suitable for inclusion in the rescue system.

(This is real, but I'm honestly missing an opportunity by not posting it on 1 April. Let the editor wars commence!)

From the man page:

STANDARDS

atto is not the standard editor.

Well played, #NetBSD well played... Image 15: 😂

2

Image 16 Stephen Borrill@sborrill@justfollow.me.uk1d

@ParadeGrotesque@netbsd It makes a serious point though. The EDITOR environment variable says what should be used by various programs and is unset by default. If not set, it defaults to vi. This is set in various places:
https://nxr.netbsd.org/source/search?q=_PATH_VI&project=src

This affects common tasks like crontab -e and vipw.

The weird thing is that atto is not in pkgsrc, so you can't try it for non-current without manually building it.

@wfk@drj@netbsd TECO is there, somewhere, on the tapes.

Oh, it's there, in the packages. Or at least a clone of it (I guess the original wouldn't compile). But I would have to go through all the trouble of separately installing it myself. That's just not done.

@netbsd i once had a really long argument with someone who claimed the FreeBSD is unusable because while we include ee(1) in base, we still default to vi(1) if EDITOR/VISUAL isn't set.

i assume NetBSD isn't planning to make atto the default?

1

Image 42 nia@washbear1d

@lw@netbsd sounds like that person was being overly dramatic and should calm down!

FreeBSD is Completely Unusable for other important reasons, such as:

  1. how do i install it on my sun blade
  2. why is there no aiomixer(1)

Nice. More emacs-like than nano it seems.

1

Image 49 njsg@njsg@mementomori.social1d

@hakona@netbsd That would actually be a good thing, I have to check it out. Nano tends to be hard for me because of 'so close but yet so different', so muscle memory fails me a bit.

(I should, though, in the interest of transparency, mention I tend to use ed for certain editing tasks :-P )

Maybe take a look at eh about 35KB (dynamic linked - c, curses) minimalist vi-like. It was added to pkgsrc by someone.

1

Image 84 yomimono, temporarily bakemono@yomimono@wandering.shop20h

@netbsd@jadedarko this sounds like a bit but it is just literally true: my ESC key isn’t being registered by vi for some reason so I can’t change modes. It will be really helpful to have a usable editor that doesn’t need ESC

1

Image 85 David JONES@drj@typo.social20h

@yomimono Does Ctrl-[ work? it sends the same ASCII code as Esc. Or, it should do. If you have a [ key. and a Ctrl key.

0

Image 86 Henrik Pauli@phl@mastodon.social1d

@netbsd I know the Emacs-ish customs are C-x and M-y, but it still feels pretty weird to see Esc-x (with a dash) in the manual that seems to be aimed at newcomers, while Esc isn't really a held modifier key.

0

Image 111 Steven Rosenberg@passthejoe@ruby.social1d

@netbsd This is great for people who have some familiarity with Emacs keybindings, or who want to gain that knowledge. It reminds me of mg in #OpenBSD in that regard.

For new users, I think the micro editor is the way to go. It uses the keybindings that most GUI programs use, so there's very little learning curve.

1

Image 112 NetBSD Foundation Image 113: 🚩@netbsd19h

@passthejoe Counterpoint: Users can figure out how to use atto in 10 seconds by spamming key combinations and being greeted with "Not bound - try ctrl+x+w to write and ctrl+x+c to exit".
