優質網域名稱為何如此昂貴?
Why are premium domains so expensive?
Premium domains are expensive because each name exists only once, and short, memorable ones are long gone. Registries and owners price them on demand. They help brands get remembered, but they do not boost Google rankings, and some renew at premium prices.
Registering a normal .com address is cheap. Since 1 November, registrars pay Verisign, which runs .com, $10.97 a year per name, after a 7% rise, Domain Name Wire reported. Yet Voice.com sold for $30M in 2019.
The gap comes down to scarcity. Every domain name exists only once, and the short, clear words people remember were registered decades ago. No amount of money creates a second one.
Two kinds of premium
Some premium names have never been registered. Registries, the companies that run each extension, flag short or keyword-rich names in advance and charge more for them. Some keep charging a premium every year.
Most famous premium names, though, are resold by people or companies that already own them. The owner sets the price, which is usually negotiable. After the sale, these names normally renew at the standard rate.
What buyers are paying for
A short, familiar name is easier to say, type and remember, so more people find a business without searching for it. It can also make a young company look established. Swedish startup Lovable recently took over lovable.com from an Italian lingerie brand.
What a premium name does not buy is a better Google ranking. “Keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search,” Google says.
Hype moves prices too
Demand can lift a whole extension: the AI boom pushed .ai, Anguilla’s country code, past 1M registrations. It earned the island $80M from January to July, nearly half its government revenue, the Jamaica Gleaner reported. Slovenia’s .si saw 20,000 sign-ups in a day after Trump renamed AI “Super Intelligence”.
Check the renewal price
The sticker price can mislead. A domain sold for $1 in its first year may renew at $20, and some registry premiums stay expensive every year. Before buying, check the first-year price, the renewal fee and what you would pay to transfer it.
