The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) held a joint demonstration of a maritime cyberattack testbed with Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU) in Busan on Oct. 27. A test vessel designed to replicate real-world ship operating conditions was unveiled for the first time at the event.

The demonstration was organized to evaluate how effectively cybersecurity technologies respond to cyberattacks under actual vessel operating conditions. The two organizations plan to use the test vessel and testbed to assess the feasibility of deploying maritime cyberattack detection and response technologies in real-world environments.

KISA was responsible for building the test vessel. It established a dedicated testing environment to validate cybersecurity technologies across all areas of vessel operations, including navigation, communications and engine systems. KMOU provided the testing waters and supported mooring and safety management.

The event included a progress report on the testbed’s development and an introduction to the test vessel, a ceremony marking the vessel’s launch, and demonstrations of vessel operations and simulated maritime cyberattacks in the designated testing waters.

Based on the demonstration, the two organizations plan to assess the practical applicability of maritime cybersecurity technologies. They also intend to discuss expanding cooperation into physical artificial intelligence (AI) applications, including fully autonomous ships and smart ports.

KISA has also been conducting research on maritime cyberattack analysis, detection and response technologies since April last year. The project is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). KISA also signed a memorandum of understanding with KMOU and other organizations in July of the same year to conduct testing and validation.

“As the digitalization of ships accelerates, validating cybersecurity technologies under actual operating conditions has become increasingly important,” said Park Hae-ryong, head of KISA’s AI Security Technology Division. “We will use this demonstration as an opportunity to improve the effectiveness of domestic technologies for analyzing, detecting and responding to maritime cyberattacks.”
