Samsung SDI posted an operating profit of 407.8 billion won in the third quarter of 2026, marking its second consecutive profitable quarter. Operating profit exceeded 280 billion won even after excluding subsidies.
Samsung SDI said in a regulatory filing on Oct. 29 that third-quarter revenue reached 4.6856 trillion won, while operating profit totaled 407.8 billion won. Revenue increased 52.6% year-on-year, while operating profit swung into positive territory. Compared with the previous quarter, revenue rose 20.9% and operating profit increased 100.1%.
Samsung SDI rebounded from an operating loss of 155.6 billion won in the first quarter to an operating profit of 203.8 billion won in the second quarter. Operating profit then doubled to 407.8 billion won in the third quarter, the highest level in 12 quarters since the 496 billion won recorded in the third quarter of 2023. The result exceeded the market consensus of 191.3 billion won by 113.2%.
Even excluding 122.5 billion won in Advanced Manufacturing Production Credits (AMPC) under the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), operating profit reached 285.3 billion won.
The battery business drove the earnings improvement. Third-quarter battery revenue increased 55.3% year-on-year to 4.4099 trillion won, while operating profit swung to a surplus of 361.9 billion won. Sales of energy storage systems (ESS) and battery backup units (BBU) increased amid expanding investment in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Sales of cylindrical batteries for power tools and electric vehicles also rose.
The electronic materials division reported revenue of 275.7 billion won and operating profit of 45.9 billion won, up 18.9% and 18.3% year-on-year, respectively. Sales of semiconductor patterning materials and display film materials for foldable smartphones increased.
Samsung SDI has secured orders for more than 60 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of ESS batteries this year. The company plans to use its Synergy Cells plant in Indiana as an ESS battery production base and gradually expand capacity. This month, it also began mass production of high-capacity prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries at its StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in the United States.
Samsung SDI is also expanding its LFP battery business for electric vehicles. The company secured a new project in Europe and signed long-term supply agreements for LFP cathode materials with domestic materials suppliers. In next-generation products, it shipped samples of all-solid-state batteries for humanoid robots and secured new customers for cylindrical batteries used in aerospace applications and humanoid robots.
Samsung SDI expects to remain profitable through the fourth quarter, supported by growing ESS demand.
