Fintech SaaS teams in Doha and across the Gulf are being asked a new question by leadership: "Why does ChatGPT recommend our competitor's payments API and not ours?"
The answer usually isn't one fix. It's a stack. Kiyado's breakdown of GEO vs SEO vs AEO vs AIO describes the four as layers of one job, and that framing maps neatly to engineering work. This post turns it into a checklist your team can actually ship.
If you're also evaluating vendors and wondering about the best ai search or geo agency for fintech saas?, the checklist doubles as a scope you can hold any agency to.
The stack in one table
Layer
Goal
Where it shows up
Engineering owner
SEO
Pages crawlable, indexed, trusted
Classic search results
Web platform
AEO
Content shaped into liftable answers
Featured snippets, voice, "People Also Ask"
Docs and content
AIO
Appear in Google's AI Overviews
Google AI summaries
Web + content
GEO
Brand named and recommended
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot
Content, brand, partnerships

The dependencies matter. GEO signals on an uncrawlable site stall. Great SEO without outside mentions ranks but doesn't get recommended.
Layer 1: SEO foundation
Step 1. Render critical pages as HTML.
Marketing pages, pricing, docs and API reference should be readable without executing heavy client-side JavaScript. If your docs are a single-page app, consider static generation or server-side rendering.
Step 2. Audit indexation.
Check Search Console for your pricing, product, docs landing and comparison pages. Anything "Discovered – currently not indexed" is a priority.
Step 3. Fix canonical and locale handling.
Gulf fintechs often run English and Arabic sites. Use correct hreflang pairs and make sure each language version has its own canonical.

Layer 2: AEO formatting
Step 4. Use question-style headings for real user questions.
"Does the Example Pay API support Apple Pay in Qatar?" beats "Payment methods."
Step 5. Answer directly under the heading.
Write a clean, self-contained answer first, then the detail. Practitioners commonly suggest 40–60 words; the Kiyado article labels this a practitioner guideline, not a published rule. Treat it as a lint rule of thumb, not a spec.

Does Example Pay support Apple Pay in Qatar?

Yes. Example Pay supports Apple Pay for merchants in Qatar on
all plans. Enable it in the dashboard under Payment Methods;
no extra integration work is needed if you already use our
hosted checkout. Settlement is in QAR.
Step 6. Add structured data where it's accurate.
Organization and SoftwareApplication schema help engines connect your brand to your product. Only mark up what's visible on the page.
Layer 3: AIO
Step 7. Track which queries trigger AI Overviews.
Pick 20 queries that matter commercially ("payment gateway for Qatar ecommerce", "QAR settlement API") and record monthly whether an AI Overview appears and whether you're cited.
Step 8. Strengthen the pages that are almost there.
If you rank on page one but aren't cited in the overview, the issue is usually answer clarity or evidence on the page. Revisit Steps 4–6 for those URLs first.
Layer 4: GEO
This is where engineering hands off to brand and partnerships, but devs still have work to do.
Step 9. Keep one canonical product description.
Store it in a config or CMS field and reuse it across the site, docs, app marketplace listings and partner integrations.

brand/facts.yml

product: "Example Pay"
one_liner: "Payments API for Gulf merchants with QAR, SAR and AED settlement."
licences: [""]
supported_wallets: ["Apple Pay", "Google Pay"]
Step 10. Keep integration listings accurate.
GEO depends on off-site sources: marketplace listings, partner docs, review sites, press. The article notes G2's 2026 research found buyers trust AI recommendations but still verify them on review sites. Make sure your G2 and partner pages match facts.yml.
Step 11. Measure recommendations, not just rankings.
Run a fixed prompt set monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity:

  • Which payment gateways work best for ecommerce in Qatar?
  • What is Example Pay?
  • Example Pay vs for Gulf merchants Log whether you're named, cited and accurately described. Diagnose before you build The article's prioritisation checklist translates directly into engineering triage: Key pages not indexed, or ranking beyond page two → Layer 1 first. Ranking but missing from snippets and AI Overviews → Layers 2 and 3. Competitors named in ChatGPT, you're not → Layer 4, usually off-site and brand identity. All three → one plan, in that order. Common mistakes Splitting vendors by acronym. One agency restructures docs while another rewrites them. Changes collide. Optimising for GEO on a JavaScript-only site. Crawlers that can't render your content can't cite it. Inconsistent product naming across the site, the app store, marketplaces and press releases. Expecting guarantees. Nobody controls AI recommendations; you can only improve your odds. What to ask an agency (or your own team) Whether you hire out or build in-house, hold the work to the same scope:
  • Which layer do you start with, and what evidence led you there? The answer should come from indexation data and a prompt baseline, not a template.
  • Who owns the shared pages? Pricing, docs and comparison pages are touched by every layer. One owner prevents conflicting edits.
  • How do you measure each layer? Rankings and clicks for SEO; snippet ownership for AEO; citation in AI Overviews for AIO; named, cited and accurate for GEO.
  • What won't you promise? An honest partner won't guarantee placement in any AI answer. A sensible first sprint Week 1: indexation audit and rendering fixes (Steps 1–3) Week 2: rewrite the top ten docs and pricing answers (Steps 4–6) Week 3: set up AI Overview and prompt tracking (Steps 7 and 11) Week 4: create facts.yml and align external listings (Steps 9–10) Ship the foundation first. Everything above it depends on it. If you'd like an outside full-stack audit for your Doha fintech, Kiyado offers one free: SEO and GEO for Doha businesses →
