As a solo founder, every subscription comes out of the same pocket as my salary. So when it came to picking a design tool for client graphics, social posts, and pitch decks, I refused to just "pick Canva because everyone does" — I compared it properly with Adobe Express and wrote up what I found.

Here are the 4 questions that actually decided it for me.

1. What am I designing most of the time?

If 80% of your work is social graphics and presentations, Canva's template library is still the deepest. If you're touching up product photos or working with brand assets in Adobe fonts, Express has an edge because it talks to the rest of the Adobe ecosystem. I put both side by side across the formats a solo business actually ships — details in my full comparison: Canva vs Adobe Express

2. Am I paying for AI features I'll never touch?

Both tools now bundle AI image and text generation. Nice — but the free tiers already cover most of what a one-person business needs, and the right model choice matters more than the tool's built-in button. I compared the three big ones for real client work: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. Rule of thumb: if a feature doesn't earn back its seat in a month, it stays on the free plan.

3. Does it replace a hire — or just add a tab?

A design tool should do the work of a part-time designer for routine graphics. But for anything truly custom, I stopped asking "which tool" and started asking "tool or human" — that decision framework is here: AI tools vs virtual assistant. Most solo founders I know keep one paid design tool and outsource the rest per-project.

4. Will it still make sense in 6 months?

I audit my whole stack twice a year. My rule is one paid tool per job, so I also keep a short list of the best AI tools for small businesses worth paying for — and everything else stays free. Adobe Express wins for me only if I'm already inside Adobe's world; otherwise Canva's breadth usually wins on pure hours saved.

The honest answer: both are good, and the "best" one is the one you already know well enough to ship fast. Pick one, learn it properly, and spend the saved hours on clients.
