I wrote a custom display driver for a small ESP32-S3 e-paper board and managed to get around 30 display updates per second, with 4 shades of gray. In this video, I explain how e-paper works, why it’s normally so slow, and how I managed to make it fast enough to run a playable Game Boy emulator. Hardware: Board: Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54, SD card. Controller: ESP32C3 with a bunch of tactile switches, 3D printed body. DISCLAIMER: I am a software engineer and I’ve worked with microcontrollers for a few years, but display drivers are definitely not my area of expertise. A lot of the code was vibe-coded. It still took about a month of long late evening hours to arrive to the state it's in now, though.
