Vectigo’s platform is ‘designed to reduce crashes and save lives for everyday drivers first’, company chair Brendan Lundy said.

Irish start-up Vectigo’s US division is launching a new safety platform for autonomous vehicles that can be embedded directly onto roadways.

Vectigo, headquartered out of Dublin, was founded in 2024 by Sinéad O’Sullivan and Brendan Lundy. The business is heading towards a $2.2m raise this year after securing $1.9m in total funds since its founding.

Vectigo’s technology offers solar-powered and grid-independent on-road sensors designed to improve road safety and support human and autonomous driving. The data infrastructure company uses AI to conduct predictive analysis to help manage traffic, and detect any potential anomalies on the road. Its technology has been shown to reduce human-driver accidents by 70pc, the company said.

“This platform is designed to reduce crashes and save lives for everyday drivers first,” said Lundy, the company’s executive chairperson. “Every winter, Colorado drivers face black ice they cannot see, wrong-way drivers they cannot anticipate and closures they cannot avoid.

“Vectigo detects those dangers in the lane and gets that information to the drivers, first responders and truckers who need it, in time to change course. The same data gives autonomous vehicles the redundancy they need to operate safely.”

The company’s Colorado-based US division delivered its first in-ground pilot with RoadSafe Traffic Systems earlier this year. According to the company, the sensors light up in heavy snow, send warnings before black ice and alert drivers about a wrong-way driver. The platform works with every vehicle on the road today, with no special equipment, app or new car required, Vectigo said.

The technology is particularly useful for autonomous vehicles, which use advanced sensors to detect obstacles on the road, though they cannot directly sense surface conditions such as ice or standing water and can be degraded by snow, glare and faded lane markings.
