As obvious as it may sound, start implementing AI agents with the simplest tasks. That's where to begin

If you've only used ChatGPT and haven't worked with complex automations, any agent changes the way you work. Change is often difficult. Reshaping a business takes time, both for your AI system and for you personally

A common mistake business owners make is jumping into complex development and trying to automate everything at once. Don't do that. Neither you nor your system is ready for it. People don't want to change, and familiar paths are easier to follow

Write down where your day goes

Try a simple exercise: for one day, starting when you wake up, write down everything you do. Note the decisions you make, the actions you take, what follows what and, most importantly, where your time goes

You don't need to turn the day into a minute-by-minute report. Write each action down so you can see later where it begins and what you get at the end. For example: open an incoming email, identify the client's request and draft a response

Then give the list to an AI tool or the specialist who will automate your processes. It gives you something to examine for recurring work and decide where to start

Choose one simple task

For a first step, look for actions with clear input and a clear result. For example, the input is an email and the output is a short summary of the client's request. You can compare that with the original email much more easily than you can evaluate a task like "deal with all my email"

Decide where the result appears and who checks it. With an email summary, a person can open the original alongside the agent's text and see whether an important request was missed. If information is missing, the agent should show that rather than make it up

Give yourself and the system time

The first automation changes a familiar routine: you need to hand over a task, receive the result and check it. Your team also needs to know who handles that step now and where to look when something goes wrong

Test the agent on several real examples, including an email that doesn't contain enough information. Keep a person reviewing the output while it still raises questions. Sending a message to a client or taking another important action is a separate step, and the agent doesn't need to do it independently from day one
