KT 測試仁川 AI 城市空中交通管理技術

KT Tests AI-Powered UAM Traffic Management in Incheon

KT has tested artificial intelligence-based urban air mobility (UAM) traffic management technology and the reliability of 5G and satellite communications networks in Incheon's island regions.

The demonstration was jointly conducted by the Incheon Metropolitan Government, the Aerospace Industry-Academia Convergence Institute and the K-UAM One Team consortium, which includes KT, Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Incheon International Airport Corp. and Korean Air.

The test route connected Geojampo and Wangsan Marina on Yeongjong Island with Deokjeok Island in Incheon.

The project applied integrated operational technologies developed through the K-UAM Grand Challenge, led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, to actual island and maritime flight environments.

The demonstration examined the feasibility of operating public-service UAM to improve transportation accessibility for island residents.

It also tested a data-sharing system that allows relevant organizations to exchange flight information during operations.

According to KT, this was South Korea's first public-service UAM demonstration in an island region involving cooperation among the central government, local authorities and private companies.

KT deployed its internally developed UAM Agent-Based Traffic Management AX Platform during the trials.

The platform uses AI to analyze flight plans, aircraft locations, weather information and the operational status of vertiports, which serve as takeoff and landing facilities, to support decisions by air traffic management personnel.

The UAM agent recommends appropriate departure and arrival times based on flight conditions and provides standard operating procedures and response measures.

KT applied the technology throughout the entire flight process, from flight planning to landing, to verify its operation under actual flight conditions.

The company also tested communications infrastructure for flights over the sea.

KT established a communications system combining a dedicated UAM 5G aviation network operating in the 800MHz frequency band with satellite communications.

In demonstrations conducted jointly with KT SAT, aircraft position data was successfully transmitted to the traffic management platform throughout the entire flight route, achieving a 100% transmission success rate.

KT said real-time voice communications between pilots and traffic management personnel were also maintained over maritime areas.

Based on the results, KT plans to continue developing technologies to expand and commercialize public-service UAM operations in island regions.

"The demonstration confirmed the potential of a public-service UAM operating model to address regional transportation challenges," said Won Man-ho, head of KT's AX Platform Division.

"We will pursue the expansion and commercialization of public-service UAM based on our AI-powered traffic management platform and integrated 5G and satellite communications networks."
