For original image generation and photo edits, including posters and invitations with lettering, start with Ideogram. If you prefer asking for changes in a conversation, consider ChatGPT. Canva suits projects that need images, text boxes, and a layout you can keep updating. We’ve also included options for other editing styles, trying different models, and generating locally on your phone.

Overview : Which iPhone image generator fits your project?

All eight options below have an iPhone app or, in Image Playground’s case, a built-in Apple experience on supported devices.

Overview : How we selected these apps

We tested three tasks in Ideogram on iPhone: generating a flower-market poster, changing its opening hours, and replacing the background in an existing product image. We used those results to assess lettering, layout, and the requested changes. Our recommendations for the other seven apps draw on their official App Store listings and help pages.

The comparison uses US listings where available. Requirements, offers, and available features can change by region, account, app version, and plan.

App 1 : Ideogram: Generate original images and refine them on iPhone

Our Ideogram iPhone app lets you generate original artwork, realistic scenes, posters, invitations, and social graphics from a prompt. You can also start with a reference photo to create variations. For designs with wording, describe the image and include the exact text you want.

After generation, you can refine details with Precise Edit, use generative fill, expand the image, or remove its background. The app also includes style presets and face swap. In our iPhone tests, we generated a flower-market poster, revised its hours, and changed the background of an existing product scene.

Our poster test: We asked for a square flower-market poster with a cream background, terracotta lettering, and the exact words “WEEKEND FLOWER MARKET” and “SATURDAY 9–2.” Generation was set to Auto, with one output selected. The app showed 3 credits for one image and 12 for four images. That generation screen accepted up to 10 reference images.

The result included both phrases correctly, with a larger headline and a spacious center. The cream and terracotta palette matched the request. Its floral border was more detailed than the simple botanical illustrations we’d asked for.

The Generate Image screen in the Ideogram iPhone app. Model is set to Auto, Reference images shows 0/10, and the prompt asks for a square illustrated flower-market poster with a warm cream background, terracotta lettering, simple botanical illustrations around the edges, and exactly the text “WEEKEND FLOWER MARKET” and “SATURDAY 9–2”. Below the prompt are two Auto menus, one reading Auto (4), then Advanced settings, an Add to Collection button, and a Generate button showing 12.00 credits.

This is the generation screen with our poster prompt, shown at the four-image setting, which costs 12 credits.

Changing the hours: We opened Precise Edit and asked it to replace “SATURDAY 9–2” with “SUNDAY 10–3,” keeping the rest of the poster. At Medium quality, the app showed a cost of 6 credits for the edit. The revised preview showed the new hours while keeping the same headline, floral border, colors, and overall layout.

For an invitation or event graphic, that means you can generate the visual and request a specific copy change in the same app.

The original poster: “WEEKEND FLOWER MARKET” in terracotta serif capitals above a thin rule and “SATURDAY 9–2”, on cream paper framed by illustrated orange flowers, sunflowers, ferns, and sage leaves in each corner. The app’s compare button sits in the top right corner.

After Precise Edit: Sunday hours

Before and after: the opening hours change from “SATURDAY 9–2” to “SUNDAY 10–3.”

Editing an existing image: For the third task, we uploaded an AI-generated LUMA sparkling-water scene and requested a muted dusty rose background. The leafy setting became a plain rose backdrop. The can, visible label wording, lime wedges, and stone surface remained recognizable in the preview.

If you already have an image you like, a background change lets you try a different setting without starting the design again.

A pale green LUMA sparkling water can labeled LUMA, SPARKLING WATER, LIME, and 330 ml, between two lime wedges on a pale stone ledge, in front of a blurred stone wall and leafy plants.

Free access and saving: Our app listing offers free weekly credits, and its release notes confirm WebP saving. Free creations are public by default, and our paid web plans add private generation. Our pricing page explains the options.

The official seller is Ideogram AI Inc, and the US listing requires iOS 16.6 or later. The App Store lists Basic Monthly at $11.99. Our website currently starts with Plus at $20/month; these are different plan listings, so compare the included features as well as the price.

For a design that needs later copy changes, you can continue in Studio on the web. Our editable text layers let you turn detected lettering into text layers and adjust the wording and typography.

Download Ideogram on the App Store and create your own poster or revise an existing image.

App 2 : ChatGPT: Work through an image in conversation

ChatGPT lets you create and revise images in a conversation. Ask for an image, upload a reference, then describe what you want to change.

On iPhone, you can upload an image, request a transparent background, or select an area to edit. OpenAI’s image guide explains these controls, along with saving and sharing.

For an iPhone wallpaper, start with the scene, then ask for empty space at the top so the subject won’t compete with the clock. Follow with a specific change, such as a softer background color. Working one change at a time makes it easier to see what the revision did.

Editing consideration: OpenAI notes that edits can extend beyond the selected area. Recheck the whole picture after a targeted revision, especially faces, wording, and object edges.

Free accounts include image generation with separate usage limits. Start there to see whether you prefer describing revisions in chat. The official iPhone app is published by OpenAI and requires iOS 18 or later. Its lowest listed subscription is Go at $8/month, with higher image limits than Free. Under , you can turn off model-improvement sharing for eligible personal accounts.

App 3 : Adobe Firefly: Generate images and make targeted changes

Firefly fits projects that involve removing objects, replacing a background, or extending an image after generation. Adobe’s mobile help covers those operations alongside text-to-image generation, composition references, and Prompt to Edit.

An illustration might work as a square post but need more space above the subject for a Story. Use expansion for that extra area, or removal for an unwanted object inside the scene. Firefly provides separate tools for those changes.

Model choice: Firefly’s mobile documentation also covers partner models. Generation options, credit costs, and terms can differ by model. The Firefly app name doesn’t mean every image comes from Adobe’s own model.

Files and compatibility: Adobe’s mobile technical requirements document JPG/PNG image downloads up to 2000 × 2000 pixels. Its current iPhone listing requires iOS 18 or later and lists Mobile Monthly at $4.99. The help page still states iOS 17, so use the App Store requirement when installing. Check that size works for your project, such as a print or a wallpaper.

Firefly makes particular sense if you already use Adobe apps and want to continue the project there. You can sync creations through Creative Cloud to continue working in other Adobe apps.

App 4 : Google Gemini: Edit photos and combine visual ideas

Gemini lets you upload photos and explain how they should change or come together. Google’s iPhone help documents generation, edits to uploaded images, and combining images into a new result.

For a personal mockup, upload your photo and describe the new setting. Name the details you want to preserve, such as the subject’s clothing or an object’s color. Compare the result with the source before sharing a picture that needs to represent the original accurately.

Downloads: Google currently documents 1K image downloads without an AI plan and 2K with a Google AI plan. The US App Store listing requires iOS 18.2 or later and shows AI Plus at $4.99 and AI Pro at $19.99; the purchase list doesn’t specify the billing period. Image features also have account, age, language, and regional conditions.

Save versus share: In the mobile app, touch and hold an image and choose Save to download it. Google says Share creates a public image link. Choose the action that matches your intention, particularly for personal photos.

Google’s iPhone image-generation help explains saving, public sharing, and account conditions in more detail.

App 5 : Leonardo.Ai: Explore models and visual directions

Leonardo gives you several ways to explore a visual idea before settling on one. Its iPhone app offers multiple generation models and preset Blueprints, alongside prompt-based editing, enhancement, expansion, and background removal.

For a cover image or mood board, you might try a photographic treatment first, then an illustrated version. Preset starting points can help you explore without writing every stylistic detail into the first prompt.

Keep track of the model: When comparing your results, record which model and settings produced each image. Changing the model can change the outcome, so an app-level recommendation alone won’t tell you which configuration suits your subject.

The official App Store listing identifies Leonardo Interactive Pty Ltd as seller, requires iOS 16 or later, and shows Essential at $15.99 without a billing period in the purchase label. Leonardo’s web plan comparison lists 150 daily tokens and Auto-only model access on Free, with public creations. Essential adds model selection and private generations. The token allowance is not an image count: different operations can use different amounts.

App 6 : Canva: Turn imagery into a finished design

Canva brings image generation, templates, and editable text together for posts and invitations. Generate artwork or import an image, then arrange headlines and practical details around it.

Keep recurring details editable: If you promote a weekly class, generate or import the artwork, then add the time, price, and booking details as text boxes. Next week, you can update those details without asking a generator to recreate the whole image. AI tools, premium elements, and background removal have separate access conditions.

The Canva iPhone app requires iOS 15.4 or later. Its US purchase list shows Pro Monthly prices of $14.99, $15, and $18; use the offer shown to your account. Pro design access and AI-generation allowances are separate details to compare.

App 7 : Apple Image Playground: Create personal images within Apple’s ecosystem

Image Playground is worth checking before installing another generator if you have a supported iPhone. Apple documents creating images from descriptions, concepts, and people from your photo library, with connections to experiences such as Messages.

Start here for a personal image to send in a conversation. If your project needs precise poster wording, separate text elements, or several planned revisions, choose around those requirements instead.

Compatibility matters: Installing a recent iOS version alone doesn’t guarantee eligibility. Apple’s compatibility guidance includes iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, and other named supported models. Standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus aren’t in that supported group. Availability also depends on software, language, region, and the selected feature.

Don’t assume every Image Playground mode is offline or unlimited. Apple’s current guidance identifies server-dependent image features and usage conditions. Check the options shown on your device and Apple’s Image Playground guide before choosing it specifically for local processing.

App 8 : Draw Things: Run local generation with more control

Draw Things lets you select downloadable models and run generation locally. Its tools include image-to-image creation, inpainting for changes within an image, outpainting to extend it, and ControlNet for additional control over structure.

Local creation doesn’t need a subscription, and the developer states that prompts and images stay on the device during offline creation. The app also offers optional cloud compute, so choose the processing mode deliberately.

Allow for setup: The app requires iOS 15.4 or later. Model files, available storage, and your iPhone’s resources matter. Being able to install the app doesn’t mean every model will be practical on your device.

Draw Things fits readers who want to manage their own models. If you just need an occasional invitation or social image, start with an app that lets you enter a prompt and revise the result.

The official Draw Things listing distinguishes free local creation from optional cloud features. If you import a model for business work, check that model’s license as well as the app’s terms.

Reference : Which AI image generator apps can you use for free?

Ideogram, ChatGPT, Gemini, Leonardo, Firefly, and Canva offer ways to start without a paid subscription, but the included tasks and allowances differ. Draw Things offers free local generation. Image Playground access depends on your device and chosen mode.

Instead of comparing “free” badges, check whether the free route covers your complete project:

  • Can you generate the image you need?
  • Can you upload a photo or make the required edit?
  • Can you download a suitable file?
  • Is the image’s visibility appropriate for your project?

For occasional artwork, a recurring allowance may be enough. ChatGPT’s image limits are separate from text-chat limits. Leonardo’s Free plan uses daily tokens and Auto model access. Draw Things has no token limit for local creation. In our Ideogram test, one image cost 3 credits and the edit cost 6 at Medium quality.

Reference : Check the saved file and subscription before committing

Open a downloaded image at full size. Check spelling, faces, edges, and details that a phone preview can hide. Then inspect the file’s pixel dimensions and format.

A PNG file can support transparency, but the format alone doesn’t prove the background is transparent. Likewise, a larger canvas doesn’t add detail to a smaller source image automatically. Save the actual output instead of taking a screenshot of the preview.

For private work, distinguish three questions: where processing happens, whether the result is publicly visible, and how the provider handles your data. One answer doesn’t settle the others. Review photo permissions and deletion options before uploading personal material.

At checkout, check the billing period, renewal amount, included credits, and cancellation route. Match the offer to the account you intend to use, particularly if you already subscribe on the web.

Reference : FAQs

What’s the best free AI image generator app for iPhone?

Ideogram is a strong free choice for original artwork, realistic images, and designs with lettering, such as posters and invitations. ChatGPT suits conversational revisions, Gemini offers photo-based edits, and Draw Things provides free local generation.

Do free AI image apps add watermarks?

It depends on the app and export option. No visible watermark appeared in our Ideogram test previews. Some services also add invisible watermarks, such as Google’s SynthID. Check the downloaded image if you need an export without visible branding.

Can I generate AI images offline on an iPhone?

Draw Things supports local, offline creation once the necessary models are available on your device. It also offers cloud compute, which is a separate mode. Check storage and model suitability before relying on a local setup for your project.

Can I use the images for business content?

Check the service’s terms and, where relevant, the selected model’s license. Ideogram permits commercial use of generated images, as explained in our pricing FAQ and terms. You still need appropriate rights to uploaded material. Commercial permission alone doesn’t guarantee exclusive rights to a result.
