The on-premises high-performance computing (HPC) market grew 20% year over year, indicating that demand remains robust.

Citing a report by global HPC market research and consulting firm Hyperion Research, overseas publications including The Register and HPCwire reported on Nov. 4 local time that the combined market for on-premises HPC and AI-for-Science servers reached approximately $16.5 billion in the first half of 2026, up 19.9% from a year earlier.

However, unit shipments increased just 4.4% over the same period. Average system prices rose as expensive AI accelerators, including GPUs, accounted for a larger share of configurations, while memory costs climbed three to four times compared with 2025.

Dell Technologies’ rise to the top spot, overtaking Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), was a notable shift among HPC vendors. HPE had long led the global HPC market in both market share and revenue after acquiring supercomputing company Cray for $1.3 billion in 2019.

Dell ranked first in the on-premises HPC market in the first half of 2026, generating $4.2 billion in revenue and capturing a 24% market share. HPE placed second with a 21% share.

Hyperion Research explained that HPE generated substantial revenue in 2025 from successive sales of advanced exascale-class systems, but such large-scale procurement deals occur intermittently. The firm attributed Dell’s growth to an increasing tendency among customers to purchase midsize AI-focused systems to integrate AI into existing scientific and engineering workloads.

China’s Lenovo and Inspur tied for third place, each holding a 4% market share, followed by China’s Sugon in fifth. Apart from Dell and HPE, Chinese HPC server vendors secured positions among the leading suppliers.

Another 45% of the market was classified as “Others,” including HPC server vendors such as Bull, Super Micro Computer, Penguin Computing and NEC. Bull was originally a French mainframe and high-performance server manufacturer. It was acquired by Atos in 2014 before becoming fully independent in 2026 and relaunching under its original name. Bull is wholly owned by the French government.

“HPC systems are increasingly recognized as the underlying infrastructure for AI and many related applications, and this recognition has propelled the overall HPC market into a new phase of growth,” Hyperion Research said.
