Chinese AI APIs From Outside China: Payments, Phone Numbers and Access (2026)
文章整理海外開發者使用中國 AI API 時,註冊驗證、付款方式和網絡路徑三類主要阻礙,並提供選擇官方平台或 OpenAI-compatible gateway 的核查清單。

Chinese models are now among the cheapest and most capable options for many workloads — but if you are outside mainland China, the friction is rarely the model itself. It is the sign-up, the payment method, the network path, and the question of whether the endpoint you are calling is really serving the model you paid for.
Here is what overseas developers actually run into in 2026, and a checklist you can apply to any provider.
The three friction points
- Identity and sign-up. Several Chinese platforms ask for a mainland phone number or local real-name verification. Others support email sign-up and are usable from abroad — it varies by platform and product line, and it changes over time.
- Payment. Alipay and WeChat Pay are the default rails. Some platforms accept international cards; others do not. Minimum top-ups and currencies differ too.
- Network path. The endpoint you reach (mainland vs. international) affects latency and stability. The same model can behave differently from Singapore, Frankfurt or Virginia.
Option 1: go direct to the official platforms
DeepSeek, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (DashScope), Zhipu, Moonshot (Kimi) and ByteDance Volcengine (Doubao) all run their own API platforms. Going direct is the most transparent route when it works for you.
Before committing, check on the provider's own site: international email/card sign-up, API key creation without a mainland phone, English documentation, and minimum top-up.
One caveat: a provider's consumer app, domestic API platform and international cloud arm can have completely different sign-up rules. Check the exact platform you will use.
Option 2: an OpenAI-compatible gateway
A gateway gives you one base URL and one key for several providers. Because the wire format is OpenAI's Chat Completions, existing SDK code usually works with a two-line change.
The catch is that gateways vary enormously in quality. Before routing production traffic, ask:
- Is it official-direct? Does the operator say which upstream API each model is forwarded to?
- Is pricing published and machine-readable? A price table on a marketing page is not a feed you can diff.
- Is model identity verifiable? Can you run your own checks instead of trusting a logo?
- Can you pay from abroad? Card, USDT, or both — and what is the minimum top-up?
- What happens on failure? Refund policy for failed generations and unused balance.
Five-minute setup
Any OpenAI SDK works:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://aiapi-pro.com/v1",
api_key="nvai-...",
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="deepseek-v4-flash",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this in one line: ..."}],
)
Verify the model is real before you commit
"Model swapping" — a relay quietly serving a cheaper or quantised model under a flagship name — is the main trust risk in this market. You can test it yourself:
-
Usage consistency. Same prompt, several lengths: compare
prompt_tokensagainst the official endpoint. A different tokenizer shows a persistent skew. - Capability probes. Fixed prompts with exact expected answers catch quantisation and prompt tampering.
- Context integrity. Put a marker near the start of a long prompt and ask the model to repeat it.
- Streaming and error shape. Confirm stream events and error payloads follow the OpenAI schema.
The open-source canary_check.py from the awesome-ai-gateway project automates the first two checks against any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
First-week measurements
Latency from your region, error rate at your real concurrency, prompt-cache pricing, and retry economics. A model that is 20% cheaper but retries twice as often is not cheaper in aggregate.
Disclosure: I work on NovAI, an OpenAI-compatible gateway for Chinese models. The checklist above is provider-agnostic on purpose; run it on us too.
