EIA 電廠清單曾在一個月內列出 28 部 2002 年前退役的反應堆
For one month, EIA's U.S. power plant inventory listed 28 reactors retired before 2002

EIA's monthly generator inventory, EIA-860M, has a Retired sheet. EIA's page gives its scope as generators retired since 2002. Before EIA published its September 2026 file, I fixed a bar: fewer than 10 generators would leave that sheet. 16 left, so the bar failed. Then I checked who they were.
All 16 are nuclear units retired between 1972 and 1998, from Maine Yankee to Zion, 8,663.1 MW in all. By my rebuilt changelog, none of them was listed in any monthly file from July 2015 to July 2026. They first appear in August 2026 and are gone in September.
August had 28 such rows, not 16. Another 12 reactors retired before 2002 have no plant ID, so a reader that needs one never sees them. Among them are Shippingport, Indian Point 1, Shoreham and Fort St. Vrain. Together the 28 rows are 10,446.1 MW of nameplate capacity. September's file has none of the 28, and its Retired sheet is back to generators retired since 2002.
Credit where it is due: Catalyst Cooperative's PUDL project had already documented the August addition. Their notes say EIA confirmed by email that it added its nuclear shutdown list to the Retired tab, and that some rows have no plant or utility IDs. I missed that when I wrote my plan. What I add is the full count and the September removal, which I found no note about anywhere.
For anyone using these files:
- A retired-capacity total taken from the August 2026 file alone includes 10,446.1 MW of reactors that the files before and after it leave out.
- A tool that follows the files month to month will see these rows appear and leave within one month.
Whether any of the 16 come back is one more bar, fixed in advance and scored on EIA's October 2026 file, due on 24 November 2026.
