當 AI 生成程式碼的速度超越理解速度,會發生甚麼事?
What Happens When Implementation Outruns Understanding?
When code generates faster than your mental model updates, you stop directing the system—and start chasing it.
The Natural Speed Limit
When I write code myself, there’s a natural speed limit: me.
I have to understand enough of the problem to write something. Then I write it, run it, break it, and fix it. My understanding and the implementation tend to move together.
AI breaks that relationship.
I can describe something I only partially understand and get hundreds of lines of reasonable-looking code back. Then I can describe the next thing. And the next thing.
Without AI:
Understand → Implement → Understand → Implement
With AI:
Understand ──────────→
Implement ─────────────────────────────────────────→
I Started Chasing
That’s what happened on a project I was working on. It looked simple at first: process a spreadsheet through eight business rules and produce a few output files.
Then the layers started appearing:
- Persistence
- AI decisions
- Confidence checks
- Human review
- Household identity
- Shared state
None of those things seemed unreasonable on their own. But eventually I found myself looking at my own application and thinking:
"Wait. Why does this exist?"
I wasn’t building anymore. I was chasing.
Making the Complexity Visible
Eventually, I started drawing diagrams because I couldn’t comfortably hold the application in my head.
That’s when I saw it:
- Dependencies I hadn’t appreciated
- Data created in one place controlling behavior somewhere else
- Rules that looked independent, but weren’t
Nothing about the application had changed—the representation had.
The diagram didn’t make the system complicated; it made the complexity visible. And suddenly I could see what had happened: AI had generated the implementation faster than I had updated my mental model of the system.
I was reverse-engineering my own project.
The Core Mismatch
That’s the part I missed about AI-assisted development: generating software and understanding software are not the same thing.
AI made one dramatically faster. It didn’t automatically make the other faster with it.
And once implementation outruns understanding, I’m not really directing the system anymore.
I’m chasing it.
