GhostTales AI – Where Every Story Has a Ghost
This is my submission for the "Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine" (https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week4-2026-10-26).
What I Built
I built GhostTales AI, an AI-powered spooky story generator inspired by the mysterious world of ghosts, Halloween and supernatural storytelling.
The idea was to create an interactive experience where anyone can turn a simple idea into an immersive spooky story.
Users can choose between three categories: Horror, Mystery and Supernatural. They can generate stories and enjoy them through a dedicated reading experience.
Some of the features include:
- AI-powered spooky story generation.
- Multiple story categories.
- Immersive reading experience with word count and estimated reading time.
- Read Aloud functionality.
- Ambient background audio.
- Adjustable text size.
- Options to copy and generate another story.
I wanted to make something that combines storytelling, creativity and AI in an engaging way.

How I Built It
I built GhostTales AI using Google AI Studio.
The project uses Google's Gemma open-weight model for AI-powered story generation. The application displays the Gemma model "gemma-4-26b-a4b-it".
The frontend provides an interactive storytelling interface, while the AI integration generates stories based on the user's selected category and idea.
I focused on creating a smooth experience with a visually immersive Halloween-inspired design.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Using an open-weight model like Gemma gives developers more freedom to explore AI, experiment with different models and build applications without depending entirely on a single closed AI provider.

It also opens opportunities for developers to improve, adapt and extend projects as open AI technology evolves.

The Spirit of It
What if a machine could tell you a story that gives you chills?
That was the inspiration behind GhostTales AI. I wanted to bring a little mystery into the digital world and turn ordinary ideas into stories that feel like they came from somewhere beyond the screen.
