Samsung Electro-Mechanics achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit in the third quarter.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said Oct. 28 that consolidated revenue reached 3.7633 trillion won and operating profit totaled 691 billion won in the third quarter, up 30% and 165%, respectively, from a year earlier.
Both figures were the highest in the company's history. Revenue surpassed the previous record of 3.4571 trillion won set in the second quarter of this year. Operating profit also exceeded the previous peak of 455.8 billion won recorded in the third quarter of 2021.
Operating profit exceeded market expectations. Securities analysts had forecast 645.3 billion won.
Products for artificial intelligence (AI) applications drove revenue growth. By division, Component Solution revenue rose 36% year over year to 1.883 trillion won, supported by increased sales of products for AI data centers, including servers, networking equipment and power systems.
As specifications for server graphics processing units (GPUs) increase, requirements for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are also rising. The company explained that MLCC capacitance requirements are more than doubling annually, accelerating demand for the components.
Package Solution revenue increased 58% year over year to 939 billion won. Supplies of products for server central processing units (CPUs), AI accelerators and networking equipment increased. Shipments of high-performance substrates for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving also grew.
Optical Solution revenue rose 3% over the same period to 941.3 billion won. Increased supplies of camera modules for foldable devices and electric vehicle (EV) platforms for automotive applications drove the improvement.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics expects strong performance to continue in the fourth quarter. The company said demand remains robust for high-specification products used in AI data centers. It also expects sustained demand for automotive components as autonomous driving technology advances. The company will continue responding to long-term supply agreements (LTAs) for MLCCs with major customers and aims to capture the market by developing cutting-edge products ahead of competitors.
The company plans to expand production capacity at its facilities in a timely manner to meet customer demand. Last month, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced plans to expand production capacity for flip-chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) substrates, high-performance package substrates used in AI servers, primarily at its Sejong and Vietnam facilities. The total investment amounts to 6.78 trillion won.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also preparing for demand for high-resolution, slim camera modules. In the fourth quarter, it plans to begin mass production of camera modules for customers' next-generation flagship devices. The company will also expand product supplies to meet growing demand for autonomous driving and humanoid robots.
