On October 7, 2026, a startup called Tab came out of stealth with a $300 million valuation — for an AI assistant that doesn't live in an app, a browser tab, or a smart speaker. It lives in your text messages.

You message Tab on iMessage or WhatsApp the way you'd text a capable friend, and it handles the errands: groceries, travel bookings, phone calls, bills, gifts, even chasing wire transfers. No dashboard to open, no new habit to build. You text it, and things get done.

What makes Tab different from a chatbot is that every user gets an agent with its own phone number, computer, and digital wallet. It doesn't just tell you how to book the table — it calls the restaurant, waits on hold, and books it. As co-founder Ammar Amdani put it, it doesn't tell you how to do things. It does them.

The trust question is the whole ballgame here. An assistant that can read your messages, call businesses, and spend your money is only as useful as it is trustworthy. Tab says your data isn't used to train its models, payment cards live in a vault the company itself can't access, and no irreversible action — like a payment — completes without your explicit approval.

Those are the right promises. But promises aren't proof. Tab is fresh out of stealth: no disclosed user counts, revenue, or independent security audits. The wise move is to start small — groceries before wire transfers — and watch how it handles its first mistake.

Tab enters a race with three clear contenders: itself in text messages, Meta's Muse as the do-everything personal agent, and Instinct, the breakout hit that proved consumers want AI handling everyday chores. Tab's bet is distribution through habit: if the assistant lives in the app you already check dozens of times a day, it never has to win your attention — just your trust.

Right now Tab is on a waitlist, with pricing undisclosed, and the founders say a new product is launching soon. The assistant that lives in your messages is coming; the only question is whether Tab gets there first.
