新 arXiv 論文證明 JEPAs 中的 Platonic Representation Hypothesis

Platonic Representation Hypothesis becomes a theorem for JEPAs in new arXiv paper

The Platonic Representation Hypothesis, the idea that AI models trained on different data and modalities converge toward a shared statistical picture of the world as they scale, has received its first formal proof for an important class of architectures. The paper, titled Proving and Improving the Platonic Representation Hypothesis with JEPAs, appeared on arXiv under the identifier 2610.39302 with a submission date of October 29, 2026. Its authors state and prove a Platonic Representation Theorem for Joint-Embedding Predictive Architectures, moving a conjecture that circulated mostly as an empirical observation into the category of mathematical results. The work reached the Hacker News frontpage at 13:24 UTC on November 1, 2026.

The hypothesis grew out of empirical observations about model similarity. Vision models, language models and audio models are trained on very different signals, yet as their capability improves, the internal representations they build become increasingly aligned in structure. If the convergence is real, it suggests the models are not merely memorizing their training data but recovering common structure in the world that produced the data. The name nods to Plato's allegory of the cave, where many imperfect projections point back to one underlying reality.

Joint-Embedding Predictive Architectures are a family of self-supervised models trained to align the representations they build across separate views of the same data, and the paper states its theorem in those terms: models trained separately on any number of modalities learn the same representation, up to one rotation, whenever their positive pairs are two observations of one scene, good views. Next-token prediction fits the same framework with bad views, parts of a single document. Because the prediction target is an abstract representation instead of a low-level signal, the model is under less pressure to spend capacity on surface details. Image and video variants of the approach have been used to study how useful general-purpose representations can be learned without labels. The new theorem is proven for this architecture class, and the paper reports that good views need 42 times fewer training samples than next-token prediction on the same corpus to reach the same alignment, so positive views, not scale alone, are the lever to build platonic representations.

A formal guarantee changes the conversation from an observed correlation to a property that can be reasoned about and engineered with. If representation convergence can be stated as a theorem with explicit conditions, researchers can identify which assumptions drive the result, examine where those assumptions break, and design training procedures that either encourage the shared structure or deliberately avoid it. Interoperability is the practical angle, since models whose representations are provably aligned under stated conditions are easier to connect, translate between and reuse across applications.

IMPACT: For teams building representation-based systems, the theorem turns convergence from a hopeful assumption into a property with stated conditions, which affects how multi-model pipelines are designed, evaluated and audited. Practitioners working with JEPAs gain a formal target to validate their implementations against, and teams combining models from different modalities get a theoretical basis for expecting compatible embedding spaces under the paper's assumptions. The caveats are just as practical, since the guarantee is proven for one architecture class and its conditions may not hold in every training setup, so empirical checks remain necessary before relying on alignment between any two specific models.
