Alongside Norway, it is Ireland’s first time being included in the pan-European network.

With the launch of ELLIS Unit Ireland, Ireland is set to join the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) network. This is the first time that the country will have been involved and it joins other new units in Austria, France, Germany and fellow first-timer Norway.

The network has 49 units across the continent and aims to put forth Europe as a leader at the forefront of AI research. The units operate as localised hubs whereby researchers can work together, share ideas across a range of disciplines and carry out long-term research.

The Unit is part of Rinn AI, which is Ireland’s national centre for research and innovation in data science and AI and is funded by Research Ireland.

Prof Noel O’Connor, Rinn AI’s director, will lead the ELLIS Unit Ireland, with the purpose being to advance fundamental AI research in areas such as core machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and information retrieval.

The Unit will also work closely with domain experts, policymakers and societal stakeholders, as a means of addressing real-world challenges. There will be a focus on connecting researchers across the country and training the next generation of ML and AI researchers.

Commenting on Ireland’s inclusion to the network, O’Connor said, “Joining ELLIS is a significant moment for AI research in Ireland. Through Rinn AI, we have brought together researchers from every university in the country and ELLIS Unit Ireland now connects that community directly to Europe’s leading network in machine learning.

“It opens new doors for collaboration, gives our researchers and students a platform on the European stage and helps ensure the AI we develop is shaped by the people it serves.”

SiliconRepublic.com recently spoke with prof Paul Townsend, a photonics specialist in the School of Physics at University College Cork, about his plans for the semiconductors research centre that sits within Research Ireland’s new Rinn Network.
