AI Bot 與 Chatbot:如何選擇
AI Bot vs Chatbot: How to Choose
A regular bot is a program, often written in Python. An AI bot is a bot connected to a language model such as GPT, Claude, Gemini or Kimi. A regular bot performs functions defined in its code. An AI bot can handle different requests, act independently, retain memory and use connected tools
I use both. When I need a strict sequence and a process that follows a plan, I use regular bots - programs written in Python. When I need flexibility and different ways to handle a task, I use AI bots
When a regular bot is enough
Say you need to retrieve data from a spreadsheet every day, calculate a total using the same formula and send it to Telegram. The sequence is known in advance. A program can run on a schedule, check the data and send the result without a language model
A regular bot can have memory and access to files or external services too. The difference is how it chooses what to do: it follows rules set by its developer. If the data contains an unexpected case, the program needs a rule for handling it
Where an AI bot helps
When every request is worded differently, a fixed set of answers may not be enough. An AI bot can interpret the text, ask for missing details, find relevant information and choose its next step. For example, it can gather material on a question and prepare a summary with links
A language model does not book meetings or open files on its own. The bot needs connected tools and permissions for that. OpenAI's documentation explains how a model passes a function request to an application, whose code performs the action and returns the result
Memory and scheduled work also depend on the system's design: it must store the relevant data between runs and have a scheduler. Connecting a model does not create either of those by itself
You can combine both approaches
In one system, a program can enforce the order of operations while AI handles the content. For example, the program receives a message, sends it to a model to prepare a response and checks that the required steps are complete before sending it for approval
Start with the task: which steps are always the same, and where will the bot need to interpret different requests? Then decide what data and actions it can access, and what must go to a person. A model's wrong answer can sound convincing, so important data and the consequences of actions need checking
That choice is part of building an AI solution: first understand the process, then decide where a model is useful and where a regular program is enough
