Structured Data for Criminal Defense Firm Sites: What Google Uses
Open the page source on a typical criminal defense firm website and you will often find several JSON-LD blocks, each added by a different plugin or contractor. One calls the firm an Attorney. Another calls it an Organization with a slightly different phone number. An old FAQPage block sits on every charge page, answering questions that were cut from the visible text years ago. Google can usually sort out the overlap, but it shouldn't have to.
This guide is for the developer or technical marketer who builds and maintains sites for defense firms. It covers the types worth using, what Google does with each one as of late 2026, and the errors that keep turning up on legal sites. For the wider set of crawl, speed and indexing issues, start with this technical SEO guide for law firm websites.
Use LegalService and fill in the details Google asks for
Schema.org lists LegalService as a subtype of LocalBusiness, which makes it the natural type for a defense firm's office. Older plugins still output Attorney. Schema.org marks Attorney as deprecated and describes LegalService as the more inclusive and less ambiguous choice, so there is no reason to start a new build with it.
Google's local business documentation asks you to use the most specific LocalBusiness subtype possible. Only name and address are required. The recommended properties include telephone, url, geo coordinates and openingHoursSpecification. Use one block per office, place it on that office's own page, and match the Google Business Profile exactly, down to the suite number.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LegalService",
"@id": "https://www.example-defense.com/#firm",
"name": "Example Defense Law",
"url": "https://www.example-defense.com/",
"telephone": "+1-555-555-0100",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "100 Main St, Suite 200",
"addressLocality": "Springfield",
"addressRegion": "IL",
"postalCode": "62701",
"addressCountry": "US"
},
"openingHoursSpecification": [{
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": ["Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday"],
"opens": "08:30",
"closes": "17:30"
}]
}
The @id gives the firm a stable identifier that Person blocks can reference.
If the firm answers calls around the clock but the office closes at 5:30, mark up the office hours and mention the after-hours phone line in visible text.
Person markup for each lawyer
Each attorney bio page can carry a Person block. Google doesn't offer a rich result for it, so use the markup to describe the lawyer plainly: name, job title, the firm they work for, and sameAs links to profiles you can verify, such as the lawyer's entry in the state bar directory.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Dana Reyes",
"jobTitle": "Criminal Defense Attorney",
"worksFor": { "@id": "https://www.example-defense.com/#firm" },
"url": "https://www.example-defense.com/attorneys/dana-reyes/",
"sameAs": ["https://bar-directory.example.org/lawyers/12345"]
}
Be careful with credentials in this block. ABA Model Rule 7.2(c) says a lawyer can't state or imply certification as a specialist unless an approved or ABA-accredited organization granted it, and the certifying organization has to be clearly named. A description or hasCredential value reading "certified DUI specialist" is still a public statement about the lawyer. If the visible bio couldn't say it, the JSON-LD shouldn't either. Have the responsible attorney check the wording against the state bar's advertising rules before launch.
FAQPage after Google ended FAQ rich results
Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health websites in August 2023. Its documentation now states that as of May 7, 2026, FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search for any site. Google also said it would remove the FAQ report from Search Console and drop FAQ support in the Rich Results Test in June 2026.
You don't have to strip existing FAQPage blocks. FAQPage is still a valid schema.org type, and other systems may read it. Stop pitching FAQ markup to firms as a way to take up more room on the results page, and stop generating it for questions that don't appear on the page. A well-written questions section in plain HTML still helps the reader and gives search engines and AI assistants clean text to quote.
Breadcrumbs and honest dates on charge pages
BreadcrumbList is still supported. In January 2025 Google stopped showing breadcrumbs in mobile search results, while desktop results kept them, and the markup still tells Google where a page sits in the site. A defense firm's hierarchy is usually shallow: Home, then Practice Areas, then DUI, then a page such as Second Offense DUI. Mirror the breadcrumb trail a visitor actually sees.
Charge pages also need honest dates. If a page carries dateModified in WebPage or Article markup, change it when the legal content changes, for example a revised penalty range or a renumbered statute. Moving the date forward after fixing a typo tells readers the page was reviewed when it wasn't. Catching legislative changes is a content workflow of its own, and this walkthrough on updating charge pages when a criminal law changes covers that side.
Mistakes that show up on defense firm sites
Check for these on any site you inherit:
- Star ratings marked up from the firm's own testimonials. Since 2019 Google hasn't shown review rich results for LocalBusiness or Organization when the business controls the reviews, and its local business docs reserve aggregateRating for sites that collect reviews about other businesses.
- Two business entities, one from the theme and one from an SEO plugin, with different names or phone formats.
- A single LegalService block listing every office address instead of one block per location page.
- An areaServed array listing dozens of towns where the firm has no office.
- Markup describing content the visitor can't see. Google's guidelines require structured data to be a true representation of the page, and a structured data manual action costs the page its rich result eligibility.
- Case results or award claims tucked into description fields without the disclaimers the visible page would need under the state's rules.
After any change, run the page through the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, then watch the Search Console reports. Validators catch syntax. A person comparing the markup with the rendered page catches the mismatches.
Questions about law firm structured data
Should a criminal defense firm still use the Attorney type?
No. Schema.org marks Attorney as deprecated in favor of LegalService. Switch the type and keep the same @id so references from Person blocks still resolve.
Does LocalBusiness markup help a firm rank in the map pack?
Google hasn't described it as a local ranking factor. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Treat markup as consistency work.
Is it safe to leave old FAQPage markup in place?
Yes, provided the questions and answers are still visible on the page. If the block describes text that has been removed, delete it, because markup that doesn't match the page breaks Google's general guidelines.
SBD Marketing works only with criminal defense law firms, one firm per city. It builds websites for defense firms, handles SEO for the charges a firm defends and for the map pack, works on getting firms named in AI search tools, and runs SEO audits that include a structured data review.
