2. The Core Problem Statement

India has an 8,118 km coastline, a 2.02M km² Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and 40 lakh+ marine fisherfolk (with 1 lakh+ currently using INCOIS PFZ advisories).

Every day, fishermen go out to sea and generate massive real-world ocean intelligence—where fish are, how currents/conditions shift, seasonal appearances—yet this knowledge stays fragmented and uncaptured, while fishermen still face rising fuel costs, unpredictable catch, and safety risks.

What Our Solution Must Progressively Answer (The 5 Ocean Pillars)

Our system needs to operate as part of everyday fishing activity to build a living, continuously evolving picture of India's waters by answering:

  1. What marine life and resources are present in our waters?
  2. Where are different species and fishing resources located?
  3. How much of each species or resource is available in a given area?
  4. How do patterns change across depth, season, location, and time?
  5. What do these patterns mean for fishermen, fishing opportunities, and ecosystem health?

"The fisherman helps us understand the ocean. The ocean helps us support the fisherman."

3. The 6 Design Principles & The 2 Make-or-Break Questions

There is no prescribed technology—we can combine Edge AI, IoT/embedded hardware, acoustic/optical sensing, offline-first mobile apps, satellite/PFZ fusion, or community-driven workflows. However, judges strictly require our solution to be:

  1. Portable & Practical: Works across different boats without major permanent hull modifications.
  2. Simple to Use: Minimal training, zero technical friction, and almost no extra effort during busy fishing ops.
  3. Reliable in Real Conditions: Survives saltwater, humidity, vibration, power constraints, and zero-connectivity zones at sea.
  4. Affordable & Scalable: Clear BOM/unit economics from a 1-boat pilot to 10,000+ boats.
  5. Data-Driven: Captures/interprets data that compounds in value over time.
  6. Fisherman-First: Gives immediate, tangible value back to the fisherman.

Crucial: Judges Will Grill Us on These Two Questions

  • Question 1: Why would a fisherman use it?
    • Rule: A system that only extracts data from fishermen will fail.
    • Our Hook: We must give immediate ROI—reduced fuel burn, shorter search time, higher catch predictability, micro-weather/safety alerts, automated catch logs for better market pricing/credit, or vernacular voice assistance.
  • Question 2: Why would a fisherman trust it?
    • Rule: Secret fishing spots and catch data are a family's livelihood and commercially sensitive.
    • Our Hook: Privacy, data ownership, consent, and anonymization/differential privacy must be built into the architecture (e.g., fisherman keeps exact GPS hotspots private on-device while contributing anonymized/aggregated telemetry to the regional ocean mesh).

4. How to Hack the 600-Point Scoring Rubric (Our Winning Strategy)

Every phase is scored out of 200 points using the exact same rubric, summed across all 3 phases for a 600-point cumulative total.

Criterion Points / Phase Cumulative (3 Phases) How We Maximize Points
1. Technical Soundness & Feasibility 50 150 Realistic power budget, marine-grade waterproofing/enclosure plan, offline-first edge architecture, real math/physics, and accurate BOM cost.
2. Real-World Impact & Scalability 40 120 Clear unit economics, zero-friction UX for fishermen, integration with existing INCOIS PFZ / CMFRI workflows, and a 1-to-10,000 boat rollout plan.
3. Innovation & Originality 30 90 Go beyond a generic "crud app" or basic GPS tracker. Combine novel passive sensing / edge AI / vernacular acoustics with privacy-preserving crowd-sensing.
4. Execution Quality 30 90 Deliver 100% of what we promise in each phase. Clean schematics, reproducible datasets/simulations, and rock-solid proof in Phase 2 & 3.
5. Team & Collaboration 25 75 10 pts (Multi-domain skill mix, locked at Phase 1 and carried forward = 30 pts total!) + 8 pts (Role clarity & collab logs) + 7 pts (Active mentor engagement).
6. Communication & Presentation 25 75 Crisp storytelling, zero fluff, visual architecture diagrams, and deep, data-backed answers during live Q&A.
TOTAL 200 600

Secret Rubric Advantage: Team & Mentor Points (75/600 pts = 12.5% of total score!)

  • Team Skill Mix (10 pts x 3 = 30 pts): Assessed once at registration and carried across all 3 phases. Even if we are from the same branch or cross-branch, we must explicitly declare distinct multi-domain roles at registration:
    1. Embedded Systems & Marine Hardware Lead
    2. Edge AI / Computer Vision / Signal Processing Lead
    3. Full-Stack / Offline-First Mobile & Cloud Architecture Lead
    4. Ocean Data Science, GIS & Fisheries Domain Lead
    5. Product Strategy, Field Validation & Trust/Governance Lead
  • Mentor Engagement (7 pts x 3 = 21 pts): Document every meeting with our Faculty Mentor and attend all AquaAirX technical clarification sessions!

  6. Stable Internet for Online Pitches: Technical failure on our end during Phase 1 or Phase 2 video pitches won't get a reschedule—we must pitch from a high-speed, power-backed room with a backup hotspot ready.

7. Immediate Action Items: Decisions Our Team Needs to Take TODAY

Comment below or bring your answers to our next sync (takes 10 mins):

  • [ ] Decision 1: Lock Our Core Architecture (Pick 1 or Combine):
    • Option A (Passive Edge Box + Vernacular Companion): Clip-on solar/battery boat telemetry & hydrophone/water-quality pod + offline vernacular voice app that fuses local boat conditions with pre-synced INCOIS PFZ maps, logging catch via quick camera snap / voice while anonymizing hotspot coordinates.
    • Option B (Smart Net / Haul Vision + Acoustic Mapper): Low-cost camera/depth-temp clip on the winch/gunwale that automatically estimates catch species & biomass during haul-in (answering What, Where, How Much) + gives the fisherman an instant digital ledger, fuel-vs-yield analytics, and micro-zone fish forecasts.
    • Option C (Collaborative Mesh & Safety Node): Offline LoRa/VHF boat-to-boat mesh + edge sensor box that shares hazard alerts and privacy-preserved ocean parameters across nearby vessels without needing satellite internet, syncing to CMFRI/cloud upon harbour return.
  • [ ] Decision 2: Assign Our 5 Multi-Domain Roles (Hardware/IoT, Edge AI, Mobile/Cloud, Marine Data/GIS, Product/Field Ops).
  • [ ] Decision 3: Field Validation Advantage: Since we are right near Mangaluru's major fishing harbour (Old Port / Bunder & Malpe), let's plan a quick field visit/interview with local fishermen & boat operators—real fisherman quotes and field data will make our submission unstoppable!
