HD Hyundai Site Solution plans to advance its autonomous excavator technology by developing a virtual simulation platform.

HD Hyundai Site Solution said on Oct. 25 that it had been selected as the lead contractor for a government-funded project under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR) to develop a high-precision simulation-based digital twin platform for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered autonomous excavators.

The project aims to recreate construction equipment operations and physical interactions between machinery and soil in a virtual environment. It will establish a simulation-based digital platform that enables key equipment design, development of AI-powered autonomous technologies and field validation to be carried out virtually.

The project will be conducted by a consortium comprising HD Hyundai Site Solution, the Korea Construction Equipment Technology Institute, SimG, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and the Korea Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association. The project has a budget of 6.33 billion won and will run through December 2029.

HD Hyundai Site Solution will be responsible for defining standard requirements for a virtual simulation component database, conducting field validation and evaluating operational scenarios. The company aims to improve commercialization prospects by incorporating field data and practical testing experience. It is also accelerating its AI and digital transformation initiatives in response to a shortage of skilled workers at construction sites worldwide and growing demand for enhanced safety.
