For employers filling hundreds of frontline positions, the first interview can become the slowest part of the hiring process. Dayforce is moving to automate more of that work through an agreement to acquire Ribbon AI, a recruiting technology company whose conversational voice and video AI screens candidates and helps recruiters identify whom to interview next.

The announced transaction would bring specialized recruiting agents into Dayforce’s human capital management platform. Following closing, Dayforce plans to integrate Ribbon natively into its new Agentic Recruiting experience, connecting sourcing, screening, evaluation and candidate engagement. Financial terms and a closing date were not disclosed in the announcement.

The acquisition targets a practical problem: candidates and recruiters are often available at different times. A conversational interviewer that operates around the clock could collect initial evidence of suitability before a recruiter opens the next day’s queue, while leaving the hiring decision with people.

From Screening Questions to Adaptive Conversations

Ribbon’s interviewer starts with a job description and can generate interview questions and a scoring rubric informed by relevant past interviews. It conducts a two-way conversation, allowing candidates to answer verbally and the system to ask follow-up questions. That makes the interaction more flexible than a form or a series of prerecorded answers, although its usefulness still depends on asking questions that actually reflect the role.

According to the announcement, Ribbon evaluates candidates using interview transcripts. Its video and other integrity checks serve a separate purpose, flagging unusual audio, gaze or response-timing patterns. Those signals should not be confused with evidence of job competence or treated as definitive proof of misconduct.

The company says approximately 90% of customers use its recommended default configuration. For large employers, that could reduce the work of setting up individual interview flows. It also makes the quality of those defaults consequential: the questions, rubric and escalation process may shape how large numbers of applicants are initially assessed.

In a previous Unite.AI interview, Ribbon co-founder and CEO Arsham Ghahramani described an approach that combines conversational AI with contextual information about the candidate and employer. That background helps explain the product’s emphasis on interviews that respond to what an applicant says, rather than simply reading a fixed script.

Dayforce says Ribbon has hundreds of customers and has completed more than one million interviews. These are company-reported deployment figures, rather than an independent measure of hiring quality, but they indicate that Dayforce is acquiring an operating recruiting product with substantial interview experience.

Rediscovering Talent Already Inside the ATS

Interviewing is only part of the proposed workflow. Ribbon also provides AI-powered sourcing and talent rediscovery, helping employers search existing applicant pools for people who may suit a new opening. The announcement says its technology has been tested against as many as 30 million candidates within a single applicant tracking system. That figure describes the scale of an ATS dataset tested, rather than the number of Ribbon customers or completed interviews.

Rediscovery matters because an employer may already have suitable applicants in its database, including people who applied for a different role or were unavailable during an earlier hiring round. Finding them is useful only if the recruiting team can then re-establish contact and move the process forward.

Ribbon supports outreach through SMS, WhatsApp and email, giving those search results a route back into an active conversation. An AI scheduling agent is nearing completion, according to the announcement; it should therefore be understood as part of the product roadmap, rather than a fully available capability included in today’s deal.

Together, these functions show what “agentic recruiting” is intended to mean here: software carries out connected recruiting tasks, rather than merely answering a recruiter’s question. The broader promise is to reduce the handoffs between finding a candidate, contacting them, conducting a screen and arranging the next conversation.

How Ribbon Fits Dayforce’s Existing Platform

Dayforce already offers recruiting software with prescreening questions, AI-assisted candidate scoring, texting and offer management. Its tools can also generate job descriptions from skills, profiles, keywords or previous postings, which users then review and tailor.

Ribbon would add a dedicated conversational interview layer to that existing foundation. Dayforce’s platform spans HR, pay, time, talent, planning and analytics, creating an opportunity to connect recruiting activity with the systems employers use after a candidate accepts an offer.

That distinction is important for evaluating the acquisition. The strategic value extends beyond obtaining a voice interface: a native integration could help recruiting teams act on interview evidence within their broader hiring workflow. Dayforce has described that integration as a post-closing plan, however, and has not announced a general availability date for the combined experience.

“High-volume hiring shouldn’t mean choosing between speed and a strong candidate experience,” said David Ossip, founder and CEO of Dayforce. He positioned AI as a way to handle manual, time-sensitive work while recruiters concentrate on engaging talent and making decisions.

The Test Is Better Hiring, Not Just Faster Interviews

For warehouse, retail, hospitality and other frontline employers, flexible interview timing can make a tangible difference. Applicants may be working shifts, managing family responsibilities or applying outside office hours. Offering a conversation when they are available could help employers reach people who would otherwise drop out during scheduling.

But interview volume alone cannot establish that a recruiting system is fairer or more accurate. Employers will need to understand how scores relate to job requirements, how recruiters review the underlying evidence and how candidates can resolve problems with the interview process. Keeping transcript-based assessment distinct from integrity alerts is especially important when an automated flag could affect a person’s opportunity to progress.

Ghahramani described joining Dayforce as a way to bring Ribbon’s interviewing, sourcing and outreach capabilities to more organizations. For Dayforce, the acquisition offers a focused route to expanding recruiting automation with technology already used in live hiring workflows. The next milestone is closing the transaction, followed by turning those separate capabilities into the connected recruiting experience the company has outlined.
