Looking back at this, there's one thing I allude to at the end, but wish I had included more in the middle: I don't think you have to use the models to actively contribute to math. As the emphasis shifts more towards theory building, and proof is treated more like raw data, some will lean into using models to see new proofs, but there will undoubtedly be many who prefer not to. You already see this; Max Weinreich uses the term “AI-vegan mathematicians”. There's plenty of work to be done in deepening understanding even if you restrict yourself to reading only what people have written, which is already far beyond what any individual could digest in a lifetime. If math was funded per proof, as if there was some market for theorems out there, then you'd run into trouble abstaining from a proof-generating machine. But luckily that's not at all how this works. Mathematicians have been writing a lot on this topic. Here are just a few links you may enjoy to see how others are thinking about it: https://math.mit.edu/~etingof/futuremath8.pdfhttps://proofsandprompts.com/2026/10/14/the-dialectical-theorem/https://proofsandprompts.com/2026/10/08/100-reactions-to-100-solutions/

I feel like the point is still being missed, and it's very similar to the way software engineers are trying to cope. The argument you are making "Well yes now this part of math we will not need to do again, but now we can do this instead" however the issue with most people just don't want to do that.... Like who are we kidding, the type of nerds who were attracted to math and software were into it because we saw it as an art-form, it was a craft, it was being the only one in your city to be able to solve a complicated math problem, it was immortalizing yourself because you discovered a proof and added to the ever expanding human knowledge. Imagine a leather workman who's life passion is making insanely high quality handbags, who takes joy in knowing everything he touches will last someone a lifetime and give them joy everytime they use it. And then not gradually, but almost overnight someone comes to his door and tells him we can make bags 50 times better than you at 1/tenth the price. But don't you worry, you can make more money overseeing the factory, or selling people on how good this bag is, and explaining that to them. I mean, ok, that just is not what I wanted to do with my life. I never wanted to be a manager, I never wanted to be a salesman, I never wanted to be a writer. A craft I enjoy doing has been taken away from me, I should be allowed to mourn, I don't care that I can do something else since I never liked doing it in the first place. I enjoyed solving problems and writing code, I don't care if people say "well thats never what programming was about it was actually about becoming a manager all along" I never wanted to be a manager, I never wanted to manage, I never wanted to be a proof reader. I just hate this existence.

As a current graduate student, I kind of have studied through higher education from the era when AI was essentially useless for math to what we have now. One thing that I've noticed has changed so much in education in the last couple of years is how often I actually study with my peers. During my undergrad, I felt like in most classes that I took there would be people who were really engaged with the material and willing to work through problem sets and have deeper discussions about the math/physics we were working on. However, now I feel like my peers don't want to engage in this kind of discourse because they can get their questions answered with more rigor and efficiency by a model, rather than by learning from their peers. Even the percentage of the class that will go to professors' office hours has seemed to decrease as AI gets better and more accurate at explaining concepts. I do sometimes miss the community of problem-solving, as it seems harder to find these days.

I am a bit surprised that you didnt consider the major point that is the economics underneath the math field. People, including the one who asked you what to do is concerned by this. If funding institutions are told that AI can solve anything, they wont see any reason to fund new positions in academia. As a result, young researchers will see their chances to be employed dramatically decreased (the chances were not that high even in the past already). Thats a central point why people are anxious and want to stop. You talked about the subject as if this was not even a problem. Someone has to pay the bills and young people are worried about this

As someone who is thinking about returning to math, I think the whole "be more social"-part is exactly what scares a lot of aspiring mathematicians. Yes, if you are already a respected part of the community, you won't lose your purpose at all. But the way to get there was very easy to grapple before. Just prove some new theorem. And by solving one well-defined problem, you get respect in the community, invitation to give your first talk etc. Everything I hear so far regarding the new future seems a lot muddier. Still, just like before, not everyone is going to make it to the top. But who does and who doesn't will rely more on building social networks etc. which is something most mathematicians really do not like. Apart from, in my case, having practical limitations when it comes to visiting international conferences, etc.

AI proofs are like space probes - we still need to understand them, to put human feet on the ground, to say humanity has actually visited a body (of knowledge).

Not really sure every mathematician can or want to become a "math influencer", or that if everybody start doing that they will all have enough money at the end of the month to pay their bills.
