This is my submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

🌼 AC Connect — Keeping Family Voices Alive with Open-Source AI

What if we could preserve not just photographs of our loved ones, but also their voices, stories, experiences and memories?

Every family has stories worth remembering.

Our grandparents have stories about their childhood, forgotten traditions, festivals, recipes and experiences. Unfortunately, many of these stories are never documented and gradually disappear with time.

That's the problem I wanted to address with AC Connect.

💡 What I Built

AC Connect is a family memory preservation platform designed to help people record, preserve and rediscover the stories of their loved ones.

The idea is simple: every voice holds a story, and every story deserves to be remembered.

With AC Connect, I aim to create a space where families can:

• Record personal stories and conversations.
• Convert recorded speech into written memories.
• Organize stories, traditions and family recipes.
• Search and rediscover memories.
• Preserve important experiences for future generations.

The project is being developed with accessibility and privacy in mind, especially for elderly family members whose experiences and knowledge deserve to be preserved.

👻 Why Ghost in the Machine?

I interpreted this week's theme as something beyond traditional Halloween projects.

For me, the most meaningful kind of ghost is not a frightening one. It is a voice from the past that we wish we could hear again.

A grandparent's childhood story, a traditional recipe, or a memory of a festival can become a valuable part of a family's history.

I wanted to explore how AI could help preserve these memories without pretending to recreate or replace the people behind them.

AC Connect is about keeping their real stories alive.

🛠️ How I Built It

I'm developing AC Connect using:

• HTML, CSS and JavaScript — Frontend.
• Node.js and Express — Backend.
• Ollama — Local AI model execution.
• Qwen2.5 — Open-weight language model for understanding and organizing stories.
• Whisper.cpp — Speech-to-text transcription.
• Local storage — For preserving family memories on the user's device.

The initial prototype includes a website interface and a working browser-based voice recording feature with playback and download.

The next development steps are integrating local speech recognition, AI-powered memory summaries and searchable memory storage.

🔓 Why Open Innovation Matters

Family memories are personal.

I believe people should have control over where their recordings and stories are stored.

Using locally running open-weight AI offers several advantages:

• More control over personal recordings.
• Less dependence on external AI services.
• The ability to experiment with and replace models.
• The possibility of offline processing.
• Greater flexibility for future development.

My goal is to make the core experience work locally, so preserving a memory does not always require an internet connection or an external AI service.

🌍 The Real-World Impact

AC Connect is intended to help families preserve things that are often overlooked:

• Stories from grandparents.
• Traditional recipes.
• Cultural practices.
• Childhood experiences.
• Family history and personal memories.

I also want to make the application simple enough for older people to use without needing technical knowledge.

🚀 What's Next?

This is an ongoing project, and there is still a lot to build.

My next goals are:

1. Integrate Whisper.cpp for local transcription.
2. Connect Qwen through Ollama for AI-powered memory organization.
3. Build a searchable family memory library.
4. Add multilingual support, including Kannada and English.
5. Improve accessibility and offline functionality.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Technology is constantly helping us create new things.

But perhaps one of its most meaningful purposes is helping us preserve the things we already have.

AC Connect is my attempt to use open-source AI not to replace human memories, but to help them live longer.

Some stories deserve to travel across generations.

And some voices should never be forgotten.
