OpenPath:由本地 Gemma 驅動的開源入門工具
OpenPath: Your First Step into Open Source, Powered by Local Gemma
The Problem
Everyone tells beginners to "contribute to open source." Nobody tells you how.
You open a repo and see hundreds of issues. Is this one beginner-friendly? What does it even mean? Do I have the right skills? What do I do first? Most newcomers close the tab and never come back.
GitHub gives you access to the issues. It doesn't give you the confidence to start.
What I Built
OpenPath brings issue discovery, personalized recommendations, AI explanations, and contribution guidance into one workflow, so the gap between finding an issue and knowing how to begin gets a lot smaller.
🔍 Real issue discovery
Paste any public GitHub repository URL and OpenPath pulls in its real issues through the GitHub API. No hard-coded examples.
🎯 Skill-based recommendations
Tell OpenPath your technical skills and experience level. It combines that with issue details and labels to recommend tasks that are potentially a good fit for you.
🧠 AI-powered issue explanations
Pick an issue and ask for an explanation. The AI clarifies what the issue is about, which skills are relevant, and why it could be a good starting point.
🗺️ Actionable contribution roadmaps
OpenPath breaks the journey into manageable steps:
- Understand the issue
- Review the contribution guidelines
- Inspect the relevant code
- Set up the project
- Implement a change
- Test it
- Prepare your pull request
Why Gemma, and Why Local
OpenPath runs Gemma (gemma4:e2b) locally through Ollama. It connects to Ollama's default local endpoint instead of relying on a hosted AI inference API, so the local AI workflow needs no cloud AI API key.
For a tool aimed at students, that matters: nothing to sign up for, nothing to pay for, just a model on your own machine.
The backend also includes an AI status check that verifies Ollama is reachable and that the configured model is installed, so setup problems show up before you try the AI features.
How It Works
- Input: repository URL + your skills and experience
- Backend: Node.js + Express processes the request and fetches issue data from GitHub
- Local AI: Ollama runs Gemma to generate explanations and guidance
- Frontend: React shows recommendations, explanations, and roadmaps
Tech Stack
| Technology | Purpose |
|---|---|
| React + Vite | Frontend UI and tooling |
| JavaScript | Application logic |
| Node.js + Express | Backend and API routes |
| GitHub API | Retrieving repository issues |
| Ollama | Running the model locally |
| Gemma 4 E2B | Local explanations and guidance |
| REST APIs | Frontend ↔ backend ↔ Ollama |
What Makes It Different
OpenPath isn't just a GitHub issue browser. It focuses on helping people understand and approach contributions:
- Personalized to your skills and experience
- Accessible to beginners facing unfamiliar technical issues
- Actionable, with clear steps instead of vague advice
- Local-first AI, with no hosted inference API required
Try It
💻 GitHub: https://github.com/aayushi2882/openpath
There's no hosted live demo because OpenPath runs locally with Ollama. Pull the model with ollama pull gemma4:e2b, then follow the README to start the backend and frontend.
What's Next
The next idea is website inspection with Playwright: give OpenPath a website URL (and optionally a GitHub repo for context) and get suggestions for UI/UX improvements, like cluttered cards or a missing footer. That would turn it into a source of contribution ideas too. This is future scope, not part of the current build.
Open source shouldn't feel like a locked door. OpenPath is my attempt at handing beginners the key.
