Cohere announced on October 29, 2026, the initial close of its Series E funding round targeting up to CAD $7 billion, which the company said would represent a CAD $35.7 billion valuation. The companies of Schwarz Group committed as lead investor, with Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital and the Government of Canada joining as new investors.
Round Terms and Lead Investor
Cohere, a provider of sovereign AI systems for regulated industries and governments, described the round as the largest private financing round ever undertaken by a Canadian technology company. The announcement characterized Schwarz Group as one of Europe’s largest investors in AI and cloud infrastructure and noted that its IT and digital division, Schwarz Digits, recently committed billions to next-generation data centre capacity in Germany. Inovia Capital, NVIDIA and Prosperity7 Ventures participated as returning investors.
“Today we are announcing the initial close of our Series E, a record-setting round that marks the largest private capital raise in Canadian history,” said Aidan Gomez, Cohere’s CEO and co-founder. Gomez said the federal government’s participation highlights Canada’s leadership in global AI development and framed the raise as historic for the company’s home country.
Use of Proceeds and Reported Growth
Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said Cohere will use the funding to advance its modelling and product roadmap, develop fully verticalized AI solutions for regulated industries, and invest in long-term compute infrastructure needed to train frontier-level enterprise models. He said the company will continue to scale across North America, EMEA and APAC to meet customer demand.
Cohere reported 165% year-over-year growth in annual recurring revenue for the period ending Q3 2026, attributing the increase to new customer wins and expansions across commercial and public sector organizations since the launch of North, its agentic AI platform. The company said it grew its global customer base by 20x over the past year to 300 customers, naming Aston Martin Aramco, Bell Canada, Fujitsu, RBC, RWS, PwC, TD Bank and TKMS among organizations in highly regulated industries using its technology.
Government of Canada Equity Investment
According to the announcement, the Government of Canada’s equity investment will help Cohere scale from Canada, supporting Canadian jobs and computing infrastructure, and Cohere is making a number of commitments tied to the investment to support Canada’s economic vision and grow the country’s sovereign AI ecosystem.
“Canada’s investment in Cohere is an investment in choice, in security, and in our ability to live our lives as we choose,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement included in the announcement, adding that sovereignty depends on the ability to build, adopt and govern AI on Canada’s own terms.
Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, said the investment is intended to ensure Canadian companies can grow, build and create jobs at home, and that entrepreneurs should not have to leave Canada to build a globally successful business. Karsten Wildberger, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization, congratulated Cohere and said the financing demonstrates market confidence in sovereign AI and in the shared vision of Cohere and Aleph Alpha, pointing to German-Canadian cooperation and the Sovereign Tech Alliance.
Christian Müller, CEO of Schwarz Digits, described digital sovereignty as strategic choice, interoperability and holding the keys to one’s own data, and said the goal is to anchor Cohere’s frontier capabilities in Schwarz Digits’ sovereign STACKIT cloud infrastructure following the company’s combination with Aleph Alpha.
The announcement cited a McKinsey projection that the sovereign AI market will reach $600 billion, describing it as one of the fastest-growing segments of the global AI economy.
The round follows earlier documented disclosures. On August 19, 2025, Cohere signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Canada to apply its sovereign AI technology across the public sector. In an April 24, 2026 post, Cohere said the companies of Schwarz Group intended to back the then-upcoming Series E as lead investor with a $600 million (€500 million) structured financing commitment.
2026 Transactions and Product Development
Cohere’s 2026 transactions include Aleph Alpha, Reliant AI and AISLE, which the company said strengthened its platform across sovereign AI, healthcare and life sciences, and cybersecurity. The company said it has expanded its presence across North America, EMEA and APAC through new offices, customer growth and strategic partnerships while scaling deployments across financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, energy, critical infrastructure and government.
Cohere said the funding will advance product development across its model portfolio and full-stack platform, which received its biggest upgrade yet with the launch of North 2 in 2026. Its 2026 releases span generation, search, speech, code and translation, including Command A+, Cohere Transcribe, Parse 5, Embed 5, Rerank 5, North Mini Code and North Small Translate.
