Free credits are the cheapest runway a startup can get. The catch is that every program has its own tiers, eligibility rules and fine print, spread across a dozen official pages.

We keep founder guides for these programs on StartupReader, each built from the program's official pages and re-checked every month. This post pulls the parts that matter to developers into one place: what each program gives, which tier you'll realistically land in, what the credits don't cover, and how to stop one bad deploy from burning them.

Figures below are from the guides as checked in October 2026. The headline numbers are maximums; most startups start on a smaller tier. Always confirm on the official page before you apply.

TL;DR

Program Max credits Where most startups start Watch out for
Google for Startups Cloud $350,000 for AI startups (over two years) Start tier: $2,000 Scale tier is for VC-funded startups
Cloudflare for Startups $350,000 $10,000 (bootstrapped, under $1M raised) Credits last 1 year; R2 capped at $10K
AWS Activate $200,000 (Portfolio tier) Founders tier: up to $5,000 Portfolio needs an Activate Provider
Microsoft for Startups $150,000 in Azure credits Depends on stage Marketplace and support plans not covered
NVIDIA Inception Free membership, no equity Open all year, no cohorts Benefits are discounts, training and intros
Stripe Atlas $2,500 in Stripe product credits US$500 incorporation fee Fee refunded with a $5,000 Treasury deposit
Claude for Startups $1,000 API credits + a free year of Claude Team — Closed to new applicants right now

Google for Startups Cloud Program

Two tiers. Start is for digital-native startups with a working MVP, a clear business model and plans to raise venture funding soon, founded in the last 24 months and not yet given Google Cloud credits beyond the free trial. It comes with $2,000 in credits.

Scale is for VC-funded startups founded in the last five years, with up to $200,000 in credits, or up to $350,000 over two years for AI-first startups. Scale members also get partner perks, such as a year of Datadog Pro and ElevenLabs credits.

Credits cover Google Cloud services and select Google offerings, including Google's own models such as Gemini and Gemma. Third-party models are billed directly and aren't covered.

Cloudflare for Startups

Three tiers, decided mainly by how much you've raised:

  • Tier 3: $10,000 in credits for bootstrapped or self-funded startups under $1M raised
  • Tier 2: $100,000 for startups under $5M raised and backed by an affiliated partner
  • Tier 1: $350,000 for startups with $5M+ raised, with priority support and Solutions Architect office hours

Credits last one year and apply to usage-based products such as Workers. Core security and networking (DDoS and bot protection, WAF) is included at no cost on every tier. Two caveats developers hit: R2 is covered only up to $10,000, and AI Gateway is temporarily not covered.

AWS Activate

  • Activate Founders: for self-funded startups, up to $5,000 in credits.
  • Activate Portfolio: up to $200,000, for startups backed by an Activate Provider (an investor, accelerator or incubator in AWS's network). Apply within 12 months of your most recent funding round.

You need to be founded in the last 10 years and have an AWS account on a paid plan. Credits apply automatically to 200+ eligible services, and also to third-party models on Amazon Bedrock. They don't cover past bills.

Microsoft for Startups (Founders Hub)

Up to $150,000 in Azure credits through a sponsored Azure subscription, plus access to Microsoft Foundry models and Azure AI services. Two details worth knowing before you plan around them:

  • Credits cover Azure consumption only. Azure Marketplace purchases, non-Azure products and support plans aren't covered.
  • GitHub isn't covered by default. To spend credits on GitHub Copilot, Codespaces or Actions, connect your Azure subscription as the payment method in GitHub.

NVIDIA Inception

Free, with no fees, no deadlines and no equity. You need to be incorporated, under 10 years old, with a working website and a clear use for NVIDIA technology. Members get technical training, discounts on NVIDIA hardware, cloud credits, VC introductions and marketing support. Applications are open all year.

Claude for Startups (currently closed)

Anthropic's program gave accepted startups $1,000 in Claude API credits (valid six months) and a free year of Claude Team with Claude Code for up to five Premium seats. As of 28 October 2026, Anthropic says the current cohort is full and it isn't accepting new applications; the program continues for existing members.

Building in India? Three more worth knowing

  • DPIIT startup recognition: free, applied for on the National Single Window System, for entities under 10 years old with turnover under ₹200 crore. The two schemes below both require it.
  • Section 80-IAC: a 100% tax deduction on profits for three consecutive years out of your first ten, for DPIIT-recognised private limited companies and LLPs incorporated after 1 April 2016.
  • Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups: guarantees on loans of up to ₹20 crore per borrower, with 85% cover on loans up to ₹10 crore.

How not to burn your credits

Credits feel like free money until a forgotten GPU instance or a retry loop eats a month's worth over a weekend. Most programs won't restore credits you burned by accident.

1. Set budget alerts on day one. Alert at 50%, 80% and 100% of what you expect to spend each month. On Google Cloud:

gcloud billing budgets create \
  --billing-account=XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX \
  --display-name="credits-guard" \
  --budget-amount=1000USD \
  --threshold-rule=percent=0.5 \
  --threshold-rule=percent=0.8 \
  --threshold-rule=percent=1.0

AWS Budgets and Azure Cost Management budgets do the same job. An alert isn't a hard stop, so pair it with quotas on anything that can scale itself.

2. Tag everything. At minimum environment, owner and workload. When the alert fires, tags tell you in one query whether it was prod, a staging cluster or an experiment someone forgot.

3. Know what's excluded before you build on it. Marketplace software, support plans and some third-party models are billed separately even while you have credits. Cloudflare caps R2 at $10,000. Check the "what's covered" section of each guide before you pick a service.

4. Apply when you're ready to spend. Credits expire: Cloudflare's after a year, Claude's after six months, and AWS Portfolio has to be claimed within 12 months of your latest round. Applying long before launch can waste them.

5. Stack, don't switch. The programs are run by different companies, so model credits from one provider and cloud credits from another sit side by side. Moving your whole stack to chase a bigger number usually costs more engineering time than the credits are worth.

Keep up as programs change

Amounts and rules move, and programs open and close; Claude for Startups paused new applications in October 2026 when its cohort filled. The full guides, each with eligibility, the application steps and an FAQ, are at startupreader.com/guides, and the AI credits comparison shows what's open now.

Disclosure: I'm part of the StartupReader team. The guides are independent and aren't paid for by any of these programs.
