Meet Study Buddy

Study Buddy is an open-source Chrome extension for turning selected webpage text into study material. The project documents summaries, simpler explanations, translation, and generated quizzes, alongside comparison views and revision history.

Its focus is accessible learning, including support for people with dyslexia and reading difficulties. The README describes reading controls such as spacing and contrast. Those are design intentions, not evidence of validated learning outcomes; feedback from learners matters.

A small study loop to try

Choose a paragraph about something you are learning:

1. Read the original and identify what feels unclear.
2. Select the text and use Study Buddy to simplify or summarize it.
3. Compare the output with the original. Did it preserve the important details?
4. Try a generated quiz, then explain the idea in your own words.

The useful question is whether you can return to the source and understand it better. Treat generated answers as study aids and check them against the original material.

Why explore AI inside the browser?

Study Buddy uses Chrome's built-in AI APIs. Its documented design runs inference on-device, with offline use depending on downloaded models and supported browser capabilities.

For developers, that raises an interesting product question: how do you make a learning tool useful when model availability and browser support vary?

Clear setup instructions, understandable loading states, and helpful error messages deserve as much attention as the generated output. A first-time learner needs to know what to do next.

Try the early version

This is currently a developer-loaded extension. Follow the repository's installation instructions, which specify Chrome Beta, experimental features, and loading the project unpacked. Check compatibility before testing; the documented environment may differ from your current browser.

The project uses JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Manifest V3, and is MIT licensed.
