OpenLedger AI:私隱優先的 AI 財務助理

slow

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady

What I Built

Meet OpenLedger AI, a privacy-focused financial assistant designed to make managing expenses and financial documents less tedious.

Keeping track of receipts, invoices, and everyday expenses can be time-consuming. Manually extracting information from documents, organizing transactions, and preparing expense reports often feels like repetitive work.

OpenLedger AI aims to simplify these tasks using open-source AI.

Key Features

  • Smart Document Processing: Extract structured information from invoices and receipts.
  • Automatic Expense Categorization: Organize expenses into meaningful categories.
  • Ask Your Finances: Use natural-language questions to explore your financial records.
  • Expense Analytics: Understand spending patterns through clear summaries and visualizations.
  • Report Generation: Export organized financial information into CSV files.
  • Privacy-First Design: Keep financial documents and records stored locally rather than sending them to an external AI service.
  • Open-Source AI Integration: Use a configurable open-weight model through Ollama.

The goal is simple: spend less time managing financial paperwork and more time making useful financial decisions.

Demo

A live demo or demonstration video will be added here once the application is running and ready to showcase.

The demonstration will cover document processing, expense categorization, natural-language financial queries, and expense summaries.

Code

Project: OpenLedger AI — Your Private AI Finance Assistant

GitHub: Add your OpenLedger AI repository link here once the project is available.

The project is intended to use open-source tools and a modular architecture so that other developers can explore, modify, and extend its functionality.

How I Built It

OpenLedger AI is designed around open-source AI rather than depending entirely on a proprietary AI API.

Technology Stack

  • Frontend: React, Vite
  • Backend: Python and FastAPI
  • Database: SQLite
  • Document Processing: PyMuPDF and Tesseract OCR
  • AI Runtime: Ollama
  • AI Model: A configurable open-weight language model
  • Data Export: CSV

How It Works

  1. Upload: The user provides an invoice or receipt.
  2. Extract: Document-processing tools extract the available text and relevant information.
  3. Structure: The extracted information is organized into useful fields, such as amounts, dates, and descriptions.
  4. Categorize: The application organizes expenses into suitable categories.
  5. Ask: The AI assistant helps users explore their recorded financial information using natural-language questions.
  6. Analyze: The application presents spending summaries and supports exporting financial records.

The architecture separates document processing, financial data storage, and AI-powered assistance. This makes it easier to modify individual components without rebuilding the entire application.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Financial information is personal. Users should have more control over how their receipts, invoices, and spending records are processed.

This is where open innovation becomes important.

1. More control over personal data

By using a local AI runtime and local storage, OpenLedger AI is designed to minimize the need to send sensitive financial information to external services. Its privacy benefits depend on the actual configuration and how each component handles data.

2. Freedom to choose the model

With an open-weight model running through Ollama, developers can experiment with different compatible models and choose one that suits their hardware, accuracy requirements, and performance needs.

3. Less dependence on paid APIs

Local inference can eliminate per-request charges for the model service. Users still need to account for hardware, electricity, and other operating costs.

4. Transparency and customization

Developers can inspect and modify the application, change the document-processing workflow, and adapt the AI assistant to different use cases.

5. Potential for offline use

After the required models and dependencies have been installed, suitable workflows can run without an internet connection. Any features that depend on external services would still require connectivity.

For me, open innovation is about more than using a free model. It is about giving developers the freedom to experiment and giving users more control over their data and tools.

My Agent Session

The development session can be added here after capturing the build process using DevRelay.

This will help demonstrate how the project was developed, which tools were used, and how the open-source AI components fit into the application.

The Lazy Payoff

The biggest benefit of OpenLedger AI is reducing repetitive financial administration.

Instead of manually reviewing every receipt, entering the same information into spreadsheets, and preparing summaries from scratch, users can automate parts of the workflow.

The intended result is less repetitive work, more organized records, and easier access to useful financial information.

The actual time saved will depend on document quality, the number of transactions, and how well the extraction and categorization workflows perform.

Prize Categories

Open-source AI and open-weight models.

Additional partner categories can be added if the completed project meets their requirements.

Built with the belief that useful AI should be customizable, accessible, and designed to give people more control over their data.
