Lazy Student AI:用 AI 將課堂筆記整理成複習材料

Lazy Student AI: Study Smarter, Not Longer

Lazy Student AI: Study Smarter, Not Longer ✨

This is a submission for the [Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady]

What I Built

I built Lazy Student AI, a student-friendly AI study assistant that helps students turn lengthy college notes into useful revision material.

As students, we often spend a lot of time reading long notes, figuring out the important concepts, and preparing questions before exams. I wanted to make this process simpler and less stressful.

With Lazy Student AI, students can paste their notes and generate:

  • Quick Summaries: Understand the main ideas without going through the entire text repeatedly.
  • Key Points: Identify important concepts, definitions, and facts.
  • Revision Quizzes: Generate practice questions with an answer key to test understanding.

The goal is simple: spend less time organizing study material and more time actually learning.

The repository contains the website frontend, the backend that connects to Ollama, and instructions for running the project locally.

How I Built It

I built Lazy Student AI as a web application with a simple, student-friendly interface.

The project uses:

  • HTML to structure the website.
  • CSS to create a clean and approachable design.
  • JavaScript to handle user interactions and display generated study material.
  • Python to run the local backend and communicate with the AI model.
  • Ollama to run an AI model locally on my computer.

Instead of relying on a paid, hosted AI API for the core features, the application sends notes to a model running through Ollama on the user's computer.

The AI generates summaries, key points, and revision questions based on the provided notes. The website also lets users save generated results in their browser for later revision.

I started with a small, practical idea and built the core features first. This project is also an opportunity for me to learn more about web development, backend integration, and open-source AI.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes experimenting with AI more accessible to students and beginner developers.

For this project, using Ollama and locally runnable models gave me a way to explore AI-powered features without depending on a paid hosted AI API for the main functionality.

It also gives developers more flexibility to experiment with different models, understand how AI integrates with applications, and build tools around their own needs.

Most importantly, open-source tools lower the barrier to entry. You don't need a large budget or an advanced development setup to start building something useful.

I hope Lazy Student AI shows how a small idea, combined with accessible AI tools, can become a practical project for everyday student life.

The Lazy Payoff

The idea behind Lazy Student AI is to reduce the effort involved in preparing revision material.

Instead of manually creating a summary, extracting important points, and writing practice questions separately, students can generate a first draft of all three from their notes.

I haven't measured the exact time saved yet, so I won't claim a specific number. My next step is to test it with real college notes and see how useful the results are for revision.

The aim isn't to avoid studying. It's to make studying a little more manageable.

Building this project has been a learning experience for me. I'm excited to keep improving it, learn from the open-source community, and make studying a little easier for students like me.

Slow and steady, one feature at a time! 🚀
