What I Built

Meet SlothMate AI 🦥 — a sloth-inspired productivity companion designed to make everyday tasks feel simpler, lighter, and less overwhelming.

We all have days when our to-do lists seem endless. Between college assignments, study notes, deadlines, and personal responsibilities, even small tasks can consume more time and energy than they should. Sometimes, the hardest part of being productive is simply getting started.

That's why I built SlothMate AI: a simple web application that helps users organize tasks, shorten long text, and manage focus sessions without needing a complicated productivity system.

✨ What can SlothMate AI do?

  • 📝 Quick Text Summarizer: Converts longer text into a shorter version using basic JavaScript-based text-processing logic, helping users review important information faster.
  • 🧠 Low-Effort Task Planner: Helps break down everyday work into manageable tasks using simple rules and keywords.
  • ✅ Task Manager: Lets users organize their to-do list and track completed tasks.
  • ⏱️ Focus Timer: Provides a timer for focused work sessions and breaks.
  • 🦥 Simple, Friendly Interface: Uses a sloth-inspired design to make productivity feel less stressful and more approachable.

🎯 Who is it for?

SlothMate AI is designed especially for students, busy learners, people working on personal projects, and anyone who wants a simpler way to manage everyday responsibilities.

The idea is straightforward: spend less energy organizing your work and more energy completing what matters.

The goal isn't to work harder. It's to make getting things done easier.

Technical note: The current version is a lightweight, rule-based prototype. Its summarizer and planner do not yet use an AI model, so the name describes the project's vision rather than a claim of model-powered functionality.

Demo

The project currently runs locally in a web browser. A hosted demo link is not available yet.

How to try it

  1. Open the GitHub repository.
  2. Download the project ZIP and extract it.
  3. Open the extracted folder in Visual Studio Code.
  4. Open index.html in a browser, or run it using the Live Server extension.
  5. Try the text summarizer, task planner, task manager, and focus timer.

No Ollama installation, API key, or backend server is required for the current version.

Code

Repository: SlothMate AI on GitHub

The project uses three core web technologies:

  • HTML for the structure and content.
  • CSS for the layout, styling, and sloth-inspired visual experience.
  • JavaScript for the interactive features and rule-based productivity logic.

The aim was to keep the code simple enough for beginners to understand, modify, and extend.

How I Built It

I built SlothMate AI as a lightweight, browser-based productivity application using plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I wanted to avoid unnecessary setup, external services, complicated frameworks, and API configuration. The current implementation runs directly in the browser, making it easy to test and experiment with.

My development approach

1. Start with a real problem

I focused on a familiar challenge: people often waste time deciding what to do, organizing tasks, and reviewing large amounts of text.

2. Build a simple interface

I used HTML to structure the application and CSS to create a friendly, sloth-inspired interface that feels approachable rather than overwhelming.

3. Add interactive functionality

JavaScript powers the task manager, focus timer, text-processing logic, and basic task-planning suggestions.

4. Keep the setup accessible

The application requires no backend, API key, or AI-model installation. Users can run the current prototype locally in their browser.

What about open-source AI?

The current version does not integrate an open-weight model, an AI inference engine, or an agent framework. Its summarization and planning functions use basic JavaScript logic.

This is an important limitation, especially for an open-source AI challenge. My next technical milestone is to integrate a qualifying open-source AI component while preserving the simple interface and beginner-friendly setup.

I want to explore an approach that keeps costs low, gives users more control over their data, and allows the AI component to be replaced or improved independently of the front end.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because useful technology should be understandable, adaptable, and accessible to more people.

For a small productivity tool like SlothMate, a transparent and lightweight implementation offers several benefits:

  • Accessibility: Users can try the application without paying for an AI API or configuring an AI model.
  • Transparency: The current JavaScript logic can be inspected and modified.
  • Learning: Beginners can explore how the interface, event handling, and task logic work.
  • Adaptability: Developers can add features, improve the existing logic, or integrate an open model in a future version.
  • User control: The current application processes its inputs in the browser rather than sending them to an external AI service.

However, these benefits do not mean that the current version is powered by open-source AI. The present prototype demonstrates the lightweight, accessible foundation; integrating an open model is still necessary to realize the full open-AI vision.

My broader goal is to build productivity tools that users can understand and shape according to their needs, rather than treating them as closed, unchangeable services.

My Agent Session

I don't have a DevRelay agent-session link to share for this submission.

The source code and project structure are available in the GitHub repository. If I record a development session in the future, I can add it here to document the implementation process and technical decisions.

The Lazy Payoff

The biggest benefit of SlothMate AI is reducing the friction involved in everyday productivity.

Imagine a student preparing for an exam. Instead of switching between multiple tools, they can use the same small application to:

  • Shorten long text into more manageable notes.
  • Turn a task into smaller, actionable steps.
  • Keep track of completed work.
  • Use a focus timer to structure a study session.

The application brings these basic activities together in one place.

I haven't conducted a formal time-saving study yet, so I won't claim a specific number of minutes saved. The current version is a prototype, and measuring how much time users save is a useful next step.

For now, the payoff is simplicity: fewer setup steps, fewer tools to manage, and a more approachable way to begin working.

Slow and steady is still progress. Sometimes, a little less friction is all we need to get moving. 🦥

Prize Categories

No partner prize category is claimed at this stage because the current version does not use any of the listed partner technologies.

I would only add a partner category after integrating and documenting the relevant technology in the project.

Final Thoughts

SlothMate AI started with a simple question:

What if productivity felt less like a race and more like taking one manageable step at a time?

This project is my attempt to answer that question with a lightweight web application. The current version is a foundation, and there is room to grow it into a genuinely AI-powered, open, and privacy-conscious productivity companion.

I'd love to hear suggestions, feature ideas, and feedback from the developer community.

If you believe productivity tools should help us work smarter without making life more complicated, let's build something useful — slowly and steadily.
