The Computing Séance:以開放權重 Gemma 召喚 Turing、Lovelace 與 Hopper
The Computing Séance: Channeling Turing, Lovelace & Hopper with Open-Weight Gemma
Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
For Week 4's theme "Ghost in the Machine", I built The Computing Séance — an interactive gothic-cyberpunk séance chamber where open-source AI bridges the veil between modern developers and the foundational spirits of computing history.
Instead of another sterile AI chat interface, you step into a dimly lit Victorian chamber surrounded by flickering candlelight, an ethereal planchette cursor glow, a retro CRT scanline display, and pure Web Audio acoustic synthesis.
Within this chamber, you summon and commune with the spirits who laid the bedrock of our field:
- Ada Lovelace (1815–1852): The Enchantress of Numbers — Contemplating "poetical science", the Bernoulli algorithm, and whether modern neural architectures can truly originate art.
- Alan Turing (1912–1954): The Cryptographic Oracle — Debating the Imitation Game, machine consciousness, Enigma cryptanalysis, and the Halting Problem.
- Grace Hopper (1906–1992): Grand Admiral of Compilers — Roasting bloated microservices, holding up 11.8-inch copper nanosecond wires, and recounting the first physical moth bug taped into the Mark II logbook.
- Margaret Hamilton (1936–Present): Architect of Lunar Code — Recounting how asynchronous priority executive scheduling prevented disaster during Apollo 11's 1202 radar alarms.
- The Demon of COBOL (1959–Infinity): The Ledger That Never Sleeps — The immortal mainframe specter of 1959 demanding respect for fixed-point arithmetic, punch cards, and surviving Y2K.
Beyond philosophical dialogue, developers can submit modern, buggy code into the Code Crucible (Code Exorcism Mode). The summoned spirit examines the code through their historical lens, delivers a sharp period-accurate critique, and purges the algorithmic sins (callback hell, stack overflows, uncollected memory) with clean, modernized code.
Demo
-
Live Local Demo: Clone the repo and run
python -m http.server 8080, or openindex.htmldirectly in any web browser. - GitHub Repository: snehalghadge59-blip/the-computing-seance
Key Interactive Moments
- Interactive Ritual Candles: Real-time flame physics with dynamic room dimming. Clicking candles to blow them out dims the chamber's lighting and shifts the acoustic resonance.
- Web Audio Chamber Acoustics: Zero external audio files or network requests. Generates a 432Hz dual ethereal drone, vintage vinyl crackle/needle noise, and chilling séance wind procedurally via JavaScript.
- The Code Crucible: Paste JavaScript, Python, or C code to watch historical figures exorcise architectural demons.
- Offline Resilience: Runs completely offline without an internet connection using local open-weight inference.

What I Built
For Week 4's theme "Ghost in the Machine", I built The Computing Séance — an interactive, gothic-cyberpunk chamber where open-source AI bridges the veil between modern software engineers and the foundational ghosts of computing history.
Instead of a generic sterile chat interface, you enter an atmospheric, candlelit room with flickering ritual flames, Victorian planchette cursor trails, and a real-time Web Audio acoustic synthesizer.
Within this chamber, you summon and commune with:
- Ada Lovelace (1815–1852): The Enchantress of Numbers — Discussing "poetical science", the…
The project is built with zero runtime bloat:
-
index.html: Semantic, accessible HTML5 layout featuring SVG sigils, ritual candle racks, and interactive dialogs. -
style.css: Custom design system featuring CSS variables, flame flicker keyframes, CRT scanlines, and 3D transforms. -
app.js:-
ChamberSynthesizer: Procedural Web Audio synthesizer (oscillators, biquad filters, and noise buffers). -
SPIRIT_PERSONAS: Historically grounded knowledge representations and dialogue matrices. -
SeanceController: State manager supporting both local offline simulation and direct connection to Gemma 2 and ElevenLabs.
-
How I Built It
- Frontend & Atmosphere: Built with pure vanilla HTML5, CSS3 3D transforms, glassmorphism, and a canvas-based particle mist system.
-
Procedural Web Audio Engine: Rather than relying on external audio files that could fail offline or be blocked by privacy filters, I engineered custom audio graphs using the native Web Audio API (
OscillatorNode,BiquadFilterNode, and proceduralAudioBuffernoise generators). -
Open-Source AI Core (Gemma 2):
- Built to run against Google's Gemma 2 (2B / 9B) via local Ollama (
http://localhost:11434) or open endpoints. - Grounded with detailed system personas mirroring historical correspondence, lecture transcripts, and foundational papers.
- Includes a built-in Offline Ethereal Fallback Matrix with streaming typewriter typography so the entire application works 100% offline with zero setup required.
- Built to run against Google's Gemma 2 (2B / 9B) via local Ollama (
- Voice Synthesis: Integrated ElevenLabs API support for authentic vintage radio speech, with an automatic fallback to pitch-shifted Web Speech API synthesis.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
This project is a testament to why open-source AI and local models are indispensable:
- Permanence Over Deprecation: Closed proprietary AI APIs are routinely deprecated, shut down, price-hiked, or altered without notice. When you build on open-weight models like Gemma, your educational experiments and historical simulations remain yours forever.
- True Offline Operation & Absolute Privacy: You can literally hold this séance in a dark room with your Wi-Fi turned off. When you paste proprietary, production code into the Code Crucible, not a single token leaves your local machine.
- Unsanitized Historical Authenticity: Closed corporate models sanitize historical viewpoints to match homogeneous corporate assistant guidelines. Open weights allow creators to preserve the authentic, idiosyncratic voices of history—from Ada's poetic romanticism to Admiral Hopper's no-nonsense naval discipline.
- Zero Marginal Cost: Open innovation ensures that interactive educational tools remain free for any student, classroom, or developer across the globe.
My Agent Session
- Developed with: DeepMind Antigravity IDE
-
Agent Workflow:
- Autonomous scaffolding of the gothic UI design system and candle flame physics.
- Generation of the procedural Web Audio ambient noise loops.
- Persona system prompt engineering and code exorcism refactoring templates.
- Autonomous browser subagent testing validating real-time rendering, typewriter streaming, and dialogue flows.
The Spirit of It
There is an eerie, goosebump-inducing moment when you extinguish the candles in the chamber, the room plunges into deep shadow, the vinyl crackle slows down, and Alan Turing's voice speaks through the terminal:
"An automaton that predicts the next token has not solved the question of intent. Still, watching you converse with an open-weight model on your local machine would have delighted my colleagues at Manchester."
In the spirit of Halloween and Día de los Muertos, computing isn't just about silicon and benchmarks—it is a continuum of human curiosity passed down through generations. Bringing these thinkers back to critique our modern code felt like honoring the ghosts who built the world we code in today.
