AFTERLIGHT:以開源 AI 敍事為題的互動故事網站

AFTERLIGHT — Some Stories Never Leave 👻 | Open-Source AI Storytelling

AFTERLIGHT — Some Stories Never Leave 👻

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

What I Built

AFTERLIGHT is a cinematic, interactive storytelling website inspired by forgotten memories, mysterious signals, ghost stories, and the stories we carry with us.

The idea behind AFTERLIGHT is simple: some stories deserve to live on, even when the world moves forward.

Users can enter a mysterious memory, a forgotten place, or a strange little detail, then generate a story by choosing from four atmospheres:

  • 👻 Haunting & Quiet
  • 🕯️ Folklore & Wonder
  • 🌌 Cosmic Dread
  • 🖤 Beautifully Melancholy

The website also includes short and longer story modes, a copy-story feature, archive-style numbering, atmospheric animations, and a responsive dark interface.

I interpreted Ghost in the Machine as a meeting point between technology, memory, and the unknown—a place where forgotten stories can find a new voice.

Demo

Explore the archive, enter a story idea, select an atmosphere, and see what comes back from the dark.

Code

The project is organized into separate files:

  • index.html — Website structure and content
  • style.css — Visual design, responsive layout, and animations
  • script.js — Story-generation logic and interactive features
  • README.md — Project documentation and setup instructions

Built with HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.

How I Built It

I built AFTERLIGHT as a lightweight frontend project using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

My focus was on creating an immersive experience rather than just another basic text generator. The dark interface, subtle glowing accents, typography, animated signal indicators, and archive-inspired layout help establish the mysterious atmosphere.

The current story generator uses predefined JavaScript story fragments and combines them according to the user's prompt and selected mood.

Important: This version is a prototype and does not yet connect to an actual open-weight AI model or an open-source AI framework. Connecting a locally running model is a planned next step toward making AFTERLIGHT a fully AI-powered project.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

I believe stories, memories, and creative tools should not be locked inside a single platform.

Open innovation makes it possible to build software that people can inspect, adapt, and improve. For a project like AFTERLIGHT, an open-weight model running locally could offer several important advantages:

  • Privacy: Personal prompts and memories could remain on the user's own device.
  • Freedom of choice: Developers could experiment with different models and storytelling styles.
  • Offline potential: With a compatible model installed locally, story generation could work without an internet connection.
  • Long-term ownership: An open implementation could be maintained and improved by a community instead of depending entirely on one service provider.

These are the goals for AFTERLIGHT's future AI integration, rather than capabilities already enabled in the current demo.

For me, open innovation means having the freedom to understand the technology, change it, and keep building on it.

The Spirit of It

Imagine an old radio in an empty house.

It has been silent for years. Dust covers its surface, the room is forgotten, and nobody expects it to work again.

Then, one night, a faint signal returns.

Is it a memory? A coincidence? Or a story waiting to be heard?

That feeling inspired AFTERLIGHT.

I wanted to create an experience that feels a little mysterious but also reminds us that the past is not always something we leave behind. Sometimes, it is something we preserve, revisit, and share.

Some stories never leave. They simply wait for someone to listen.
